The Albums Chart is a weekly record chart based on album sales from Sunday to Saturday; during the 2000s, a total of 64 albums reached number one. The most successful artist of the 2000s was American singer Michael Jackson, who topped the Albums Chart for 50 weeks with seven different albums. 1 (2000) by English band The Beatles, was the biggest-selling album of 2001 and was also the biggest-selling album of the decade. The first number-one album of the 2000s was the compilation album The Greatest Hits by American singer and actress Cher – released in 1999, it first reached number one in December, and remained at the top for four consecutive weeks. The final number one of the 2000s was the reissue The Fame Monster by American singer Lady Gaga.

Number-one albums[edit]

The best-selling album of the decade was 1 (2000) by English band The Beatles which spent 18 weeks at number one.
American rapper Eminem spent 41 weeks at the top of the Albums Chart during the 2000s, the second most. He had the fifth best-selling album of the decade with The Eminem Show (2002), which is also the best-selling studio album by a male act.
American Idiot (2004) by American band Green Day was the fourth biggest-selling album of the decade; it spent 16 consecutive weeks at the top of the chart.
Canadian singer Shania Twain had the third best-selling album of the decade with Come On Over (1997), which is also the best-selling album by a female act.
American singer Michael Jackson reached number one with seven different releases and spent 50 weeks at number one, the most of any act. Number Ones (2003) is also the second best-selling album of the decade. Jackson also had the most entries in the top 20 best-selling albums chart with three.
American singer-songwriter Madonna spent 32 weeks at number one and had the most entries in the top 10 best-selling albums chart with two, the most for a female act.
