Thoughts on Language in Lebanon:

  • Arabic is the official language of Lebanon.
  • Prior to 1938, French was also an official language.
  • The constitution was amended to remove French as an official language, however it still says a law will determine the cases in which French is to be used.
  • Many Lebanese (what percentage?, [citation needed], etc...) are bilingual or trilingual, and learn French and/or English in school, in addition to Arabic.
  • About 4% of Lebanon's population is Armenian. Many Armenians have kept their language, and use it to communicate amongst each other.
  • Syriac?
  • Different Lebanese dialects of Arabic
  • French and English loanwords
