Campbell received a B.A. in Biology with a minor in Botany from the University of Montana, Missoula in 1985. In 1992 she earned her M.A. in Botany from the University of Montana, Missoula with the thesis "Biosystematics of "Phlox kelseyi" (Polemoniaceae)"[2]. Here she managed various projects including grant projects "Natural History Collections: Developing Ericaceae Research Resources through Collections Enhancement and Data Integration"[8] and "A DNA Bank Catalog for The New York Botanical Garden"[5], both funded by the National Science Foundation.

In addition to her work on various grant projects, Campbell contributed treatments of Xyridaceae for the "New Manual of Vascular Plants of Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada"[9][6] with Dr. Robert Naczi, a revision and update to the classic "Gleason and Cronquist" text by Harry Gleason and Arthur Cronquist. She was also an editor of the Xyridaceae treatment for the Flora of India project with Peter Raven at the Missouri Botanical Garden.[6]
