The Harpaginae is a subfamily of birds of prey in the family of Accipitiridae. In the Harpaginae you will find harpagine hawks and kites. It includes 3 genus and 5 species.

Description[edit]

The species in this subfamily are pretty small, the biggest one being the lizard buzzard (Kaupifalco monogrammicus) which has a body length of 35–37 cm and a wingspan of 79 cm and the smallest one si the tiny hawk (Microspizias superciliosus) which has a length from 20–26 cm. The species have a back collored in gray, an white belly with black lines and some species even have some red around the head. The males are a bit smaller than females. Per example the male of double-toothed kite (Harpagus bidentatus) weights somwhere between 160-200 g and the female from 190-230g. They live in South America, Central America, Sub-Saharan Africa and a small part of the Caraibbean. The habitat of the species being in rainforests, woodlands and savanna.

General status[edit]

All of the 5 species are classified as least concerned, and they also have an pretty large range since you can find members of this subfamily across 3 continents. But, still they are impacted by the human activity like deforestation and destruction of they're habitat.
