Categoría:Hombres José Domínguez Abascal (Sevilla, 1953) is a Spanish academic and scientist, currently the Chairman of Envision Group Spain and Professor of the University of Seville since 1982. He was the Secretary of State for Energy at the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, in the Government of Spain from June 2018 to January 2020.

Biography[edit]

Professor of Structures at the School of Engineering, University of Seville. From 2008 to 2015, he was Technical General Secretary of Abengoa, as well as advisor to the previous President on R&D and technology issues. He was President of Abengoa between September 2016 and March 2017.

He also holds a doctorate in industrial engineering (1977) from the University of Seville. He was a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (1978 and 1979).[1] He was Vice-rector of the University of Seville (1990-1992) and Director of its School of Engineering (1993-1998).[2]

Between 2004 and 2008 he was responsible for the University System and R&D in the regional government of Andalucía as Secretary General of Universities, Research and Technology.

He obtained the Leonardo Torres Quevedo National Research Award in 2004 and the National Cultural Heritage Restoration Award in 2006. He was also awarded an Honoris Causa Doctorate by the University of Granada in May 2018, as well as by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in May 2022.

As a researcher he has contributed to the fields of Computational Mechanics and Continuum Mechanics. He is the promoter in Spain of a school of researchers in methods and computational engineering. He is the author of numerous scientific papers and the author of several books published in the United States and the United Kingdom. He is the author of calculations of unique structures such as the Palenque at EXPO'92 and an advisor on structural issues in numerous works in the construction and industrial sectors.

He is a member of the Real Academia de Ingeniería de España[3], Academia Europæa,[4] the Real Academia Sevillana de Ciencias, and Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

From August 2017 to June 2018 he was a Visiting Professor at the Harvard Kennedy School and a Fellow of the Real Colegio Complutense en Harvard University.

In June 2018 he was appointed Secretary of State for Energy the Spanish Council of Ministers. As such, he was President of the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), and member of the board of directors of the Spanish Sovereign Fund (SEPI).

He stepped down as Secretary of State for Energy on January 18, 2020, rejoining the University of Seville. From May 2022 he has been the Chairman of Envision Group Spain.
