Wikipedia : A wondrous world or way of knowing it[edit]

The library is my happy place. It is my favorite place. When I can't go there, I try to find my special space in the labyrinth that is Wikipedia.

Favorite Quote

Wikipedia allows contributors opportunities to be heard and spread general knowledge in ways no other platform has. In the words of Allen Ginsberg, one should remember, “To gain your own voice, forget about having it heard. Become a saint of your own province and your own consciousness.”[2]

Biography[edit]

I am a student interested in various topics that concern human society. From the history of mankind, to the phenomena of conflict and socioeconomic hierarchy that shapes and influences people as a whole and individual. I have used Wikipedia as a form of entertainment and enlightenment across many subjects and hope to contribute to that experience for future readers and editors. Fields and topics of discussion that I hope to write about include medicine, medical politics, medical sociology, Asian history, evolution, nutrition, scientific history, mythology, author biographies, fiction book summaries, and film/cinematic summaries. As of now, I have not edited nor written anything, but I hope to contribute to Wikipedia in the future and beyond my academic assignments.

Wikipedia Research Analysis Project[edit]

This account and page has been created for my class, and so most of my current content will be centered around themes/topics I am learning about at the moment. My project and assignments demand that a student researches, evaluates, and enhances content in Wikipedia that concerns their interests. Below are a few articles I would like to analyze, criticize, compare, and edit in the future:

Main Article #1
Medical resident work hours
Sub-Article #1
Jung v. Association of American Medical Colleges
Main Article #2
Leigh Bardugo
Sub-Article #2
Shadow and Bone
Main Article #3
University of llinois at Urbana Champaign
Sub-Article #3
Grainger College of Engineering
Main Article #4
Genocides in history
Sub-Article #4
1971 Bangladesh genocide
Main Article #5
The Holocaust
Sub-Article #5
Uyghur genocide

Analysis Essay[edit]

For this assignment, I wrote about an article on Western astrology, knowing that it is a controversial topic but has a passionate following. I was impressed by the online presence and outreach that astrological content has on the internet and was curious to see how Wikipedia adds to it.

The main article page for Astrology includes the history of the study and other variations of astrology across the world. I chose to write about Western Astrology since it was not too large or difficult to write on. Although, public perception and views that claim astrology to be a pseudoscience have existed for all of its subsets and variations. It is great that Wikipedia offers a safe space for people to learn about it and all the little corners that are overlooked.

Final Wikipedia Project : Editing an Article[edit]

  1. The Jarawa's
  2. American Board of Preventive Medicine

In this assignment, my English class was asked to use the analysis and writing skills we have learned in class to edit an article that already exists in Wikipedia. This article was for any topic of our choice. I had originally planned to edit a medical article, but changed my article decision to one about a tribe that resides in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. I made this change since I was intimidated by the specific demands that a medical related article would require and the lack of resources about that specific speciality and board would not help me improve the article the way I had wanted.
