Monterrey La Raza (Spanish: La Raza de Monterrey) are a Mexican indoor soccer team based in Monterrey, Nuevo León. They are the second franchise to use this name. The original La Raza were founded in 1992 and initially played in the Continental Indoor Soccer League. They later played in the World Indoor Soccer League before folding in 1999. In the 2007 the name was revived and a second team was entered in the Major Indoor Soccer League. They currently play in the National Indoor Soccer League. As well as using the same name as the original La Raza, the current team uses similar logos and colourings. Erich Geyer has also coached both teams [1] [2][3]

1992-2001[edit]
The original La Raza were founder members of the Continental Indoor Soccer League and were awarded their franchise on December 29 1992.[4] During its five seasons in the CISL, La Raza were champions on two occasions. In 1995 they defeated Sacramento Knights 12-6, 4-5 and 10-7 to win the play-off series 2-1.[5] In 1996 they regained the title after defeating Houston Hotshots 10-6 and 6-5.[6] After the CISL folded, the La Raza took one season off and attempted to join the National Professional Soccer League before joining the World Indoor Soccer League in 1999. [7] The following season they won the WISL title after defeating Dallas Sidekicks 6-5 in a shootout. [8] However the team dropped out of the league before the following season due to the lack of a suitable arena. [9]
Revival[edit]
TV Azteca subsequently acquired the rights to the La Raza name from the original owner, Pedro Luis Durán. On July 17, 2007, the Major Indoor Soccer League officially announced that a new La Raza team would enter the league for the 2007–08 season. During their lone MISL season, La Raza finished as runner-up to Baltimore Blast. When the MISL folded, La Raza joined the National Indoor Soccer League for its inaugural 2008–09 season. They also played an exhibition schedule against Professional Arena Soccer League teams and won the PASL Copa America.
Home Arenas[edit]
The original La Raza played their home games at Monterrey Tech University Gym which had a capacity of just 3,500. La Raza were admitted to the CISL on the understanding that this was just a temporary home. They intended to move into the much larger Arena Monterrey. However a delay in this arenas completion led to the demise of the original franchise. [10] When it was eventually finished it provided a home for the new franchise. Like the franchise itself, the arena is owned by TV Azteca.
