Mojeek (Mojeek Ltd.) is a crawler based search engine founded in 2004 in the United Kingdom. Its headquarters is located in East Sussex, England [1]. Mojeek produces unfiltered and unbiased result; free of other search engine’s results and do not have paid inclusion or placement. They have accomplished this by using their own web crawler which gathers and indexes the entire web. Their philosophy is “no tracking, just search”. Mojeek was developed from scratch using C programming language using the Debian GNU/Linux Operating System (OS) [2]. It has gone on to become UK’s number 1 crawler based search engine and one of the 10 largest searchable databases on the internet [1].

Mojeek went live in October 2004, which gathered financial backing from family and friends. In November 2005, it released “Personal Search” which allows users to create their own topical or personal search index [3]. In April 2009, they received their first third party investment and incorporated the company as a Limited company in May of that year. In 2011 they started working on a new index crawler, which was released in March 2012, alongside their mobile responsive design launched [1]. In May 2012 it was named search engine of the month by Zen Internet LTD [4] [5].

Revenue Generated[edit]

Mojeek generates revenue by businesses purchasing their Site Search Services or Search API services. Site Search service is split into two tiers, Standard and Advance. Standard allows users to include Mojeek search box in their site, which allow visitors to search the business’s site using the Mojeek crawler engine. The Standard service only searches pages that have already been indexed by Mojeek. The Advance Site Search service conducts additional indexes of the business’s site, and guarantees that all pages are fully indexed and searchable. Advance Site Search services also include Search API access. The Search API includes all the features available on Mojeek’s search engine; HTTP request query interface, and XML format and like Advance Site Search comes in different packages.

Privacy[edit]

Mojeek’s follows a strict no tracking privacy policy, which means they do not implement any user tracking. The only information that they keep are the web logs, which contains time of visit, page requested, referral data, browser data and IP address. After storing the information for 14 days, Mojeeks replaces this information only leaving the visitor’s country of origin, page requested, referral data and browser. This data is solely used for storing historical traffic volumes and country demographics. Mojeek does not require any cookies to be placed on a visitor’s browser, only when they are setting personal preferences.
