Neurotrauma is an injury to a nerve caused by physical trauma. Neurotrauma encompasses traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.[1]
Treatment[edit]
Neurosurgeons exist for specialized treatment of brain and spinal cord injury, but some trauma centers and hospitals do not have them so these patients may be transferred to facilities that do.[2]
History[edit]
Important steps in the treatment of neurotrauma included the development of intracranial pressure monitoring, which allowed doctors to gauge how high the pressure within the skull was; techniques that allowed monitoring of cerebral blood flow and the brain's electrophysiology; use of mechanical ventilation; and advances diagnosis and monitoring of people with TBI.[3] The Glasgow Coma Scale allowed individuals to be assessed and compared with other patients.[3]
