The Wawa River bridge is a partially-constructed bridge that will connect Bilwi to the rest of Nicaragua. It will form part of the major highway that connects the city of Bilwi and other parts of the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region on the Carribean coast to the rest of Nicaragua (closer to the Pacific coast). The bridge will be 240 metres (790 ft) long and 12.4 metres (41 ft) wide.

From the 1990s til 2022, barges were used to transport commuters from one side of the Wawa River to the other. The barge in use at the time of Category 4 Hurricanes Eta and Iota was destroyed, so a barge 36.5 metres (120 ft) long by 9.1 metres (30 ft) entered into use in 2020.[1] The project employed around 220 people, 40% of whom were from surrounding communities.[2]
