Angus Taylor (1970)

Angus van Zyl Taylor was born to a journalist father and artist mother in Hillbrow, South Africa in 1970. He grew up in Vereeniging in the Vaal Triangle. He completed his Bachelor's in Fine Art at the University of Pretoria with honours in 1997, and during this time started his own bronze foundry, Dionysus Sculpture Works. Taylor is best known for his large scale sculptures made from alternative natural materials, as well as the various public artworks which can be seen across South Africa. These include:

  • Homage to Hermes (2008) at the Apple Mac Headquarters in Sandton
  • Chief Tswane (2006) City Hall, Pretoria
  • Solomon Mahlangu (2005) Mamelodi, Pretoria
  • Brenda Fassie (2006) at Bassline Music Venue, Newtown, Johannesburg
  • Layers of mind (2013) at OBZ Square, Cape Town

Taylor won the PPC National Young Sculptor award in 1994, was awarded an Alumni Laureate by the University of Pretoria in 2005.

In addition to numerous solo and group shows, Taylor is predominantly involved in national and local government as well as private sector large scale commissions. His most recent undertaking saw him actively involved in the design and interior manufacturing for the Ellerman House Wine Gallery in Bantry Bay, Cape Town.
