'Gone To Soldiers new article content ... Gone to Soldiers, 1987 is a historical-fiction novel by Marge Piercy about World War II, taking the viewpoints of 10 main characters at various points over a five-year period.^[1] Marge Piercy spent seven years researching the details incorporated in the novel.

Plot summary[edit]

Gone to Soldiers consists of short chapters, each from the viewpoint of one of its main characters. Each chapter is listed in the 'Contents' list, prefaced by the character name and an iteration. So it's no secret which is a characters last chapter, and it's possible to make active choices in reading or re-reading this book if the reader chooses. The novel is set throughout the world, but some of the primary locations are Paris, Chicago, London, New York, Boston .. as the book progresses, the locations move to Europe and Asia including

Others include Taos, New Mexico and Cheyenne, Wyoming - the specificity of locations serves as notification to the reader that the characters' lives will be explored in detail.

A number of details in the book will surprise readers, including that during the war tankers were torpedoed not only far out at sea, but close in to U.S. shores: "Cape Hatteras was the worst, but the whole coast was deadly". (p. 103)
