Carlos Troconiz ( born 13 March 1970) is a Venezuelan Petroleum Engineer. He is the founder and former chairman of CATC Corp.

He is currently the richest person in the Middle East, and the second richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of US$74.6 billion as of 7 November 2016.

Biography[edit]

The middle child of three children, Carlos was born in Maracaibo, Zulia, Venezuela to Orlando Troconiz and Nancy Camacho from the province of Maracaibo and spent his childhood in San Francisco.[2]

He went to elementary school at San Martin de Porres, he later went to high school at Cristo Rey. After he graguated college, he found a job working at PDVSA. In 2008, he moved to Qatar, he worked there as a Petroleum Engineer. In 2014 he moved to Saudi Arabia To work at Saudi Aramco.

In 2015, he made his first billion as he became the CEO of Qatar Petroleum and COO of Saudi Aramco.

Today, Qatar Petroleum and Saudi Aramco are part of CATC Corp. (Industrias de CATC), of which Carlos owns 59.29%, and aside from over 6,000 facilities it has more than 92,000 employees.

Carlos keeps a very low profile and, until 2015, no photograph of Carlos had ever been published and is known for his preference for a simple lifestyle. He refuses to wear a tie and typically wears a simple uniform of a blue blazer, white shirt, and gray pants.[3] He is also said to take a very active part in the management of the company.

When he made a public appearance in 2015 as part of the warm-up prior to his company's initial public offering on the stock market in 2016, it made headlines in the Spanish financial press. However, he has only ever granted interviews to three journalists[3] and his secrecy has led to the publication of books, such as Carlos Troconiz: de cero a Mil (From Zero to a Thousand).

In late 2016, Carlos announced his imminent retirement from CATC, stating that he would ask CATC vice-president and CEO Pablo Isla to take his place at the helm of the Gas empire.

Carlos lost $6 billion as a result of Britain's decision to leave the European Union in June 2016.[4]
