This is a project to ensure all protected areas of New Zealand are present in Wikidata.
Sources[edit]
The main source for data on protected areas in New Zealand is the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA).
Will also use the LINZ New Zealand Gazetteer.
Both these sources use data provided by the Department of Conservation which also has additional information on ecological regions, tracks, huts and campsites on their FTP server.
Scope[edit]
The WDPA lists 10,449 protected areas in New Zealand.

Minimal information[edit]
This project is to ensure existing Wikidata items have the following minimal set of information:
- Name and designation (English and Māori if possible)
- Description
- Country (P17)
- IUCN protected areas category (P814)
- Centroid coordinates (P625)
- Area (P2046)
- Located in administrative territorial entity (P131)
- WDPA ID (P809)
- New Zealand Gazetteer place ID (P5104)
Remaining items can then be imported to Wikidata with these properties.
Other information to be included if possible:
- Image
- Commons category
- Part of
- Significant place (usually gateway city)
- Key features
- iNaturalist place ID
West Coast Region[edit]
Aiming to begin by concentrating on West Coast Region to tie in with Mike Dickison's work as West Coast Wikipedian-at-Large in September–October 2020.
