8tracks is a rapidly growing internet radio website consisting of user-uploaded playlists with a minimum of 8 tracks. It was founded by David Porter in 2006 and launched in August, 2008.
The website is built upon the concept of the mixtape, meaning that people can build and share lists of songs however they like. A listener can search for an artist, genre or tag and then legally stream any of the resulting playlists in a radio-style manner. While listening, users are able to buy each song through Amazon.com. Additionally, registered users are capable of creating their own playlists by uploading mp3 and m4a files. Users can "like" certain mixes, "follow" other users, mark their favorite tracks, as well as leave feedback on other playlists.
