Jared Thompson (born 23 February 1999) is an English professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for National League North club Gloucester City.

Thompson is a product of the Chelsea academy and was capped by Northern Ireland and England at youth level.

Club career[edit]

Chelsea[edit]

A goalkeeper, Thompson began his career in the youth system at hometown club Swindon Town, before moving into the Chelsea academy during the 2012 off-season.[3] He progressed through the ranks to sign a scholarship deal and upon turning 17 in February 2016, he signed a 2+12-year professional contract.[4] Thompson was a part of the U18 team which emerged victorious in the 2015–16 UEFA Youth League and the 2016–17 U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup.[4] He was also an unused substitute for the U21 team during a 2–1 EFL Trophy group stage defeat to Swindon Town on 13 September 2016.[5]

Thompson joined National League South club Chippenham Town on loan for the duration of the 2017–18 season.[6] He finished the Wiltshire County FA Senior Cup-winning season with 45 appearances and the club's Young Player of the Year award.[7][8][9] Thompson signed a new 18-month contract in October 2017 and played the second half of the 2018–19 season at NIFL Premiership club Warrenpoint Town.[4][10] Thompson was released at the end of the 2018–19 season.[1]

Exeter City[edit]

On 18 February 2020, Thompson joined League Two club Exeter City on a short-term contract.[11] He was an unused substitute on four occasions, but was not involved in the Grecians' unsuccessful playoff campaign.[5] Thompson departed St James Park when his contract expired.[12]

Brentford[edit]

On 20 September 2020, Thompson signed a short-term contract with the B team at Championship club Brentford,[13] which was later extended until the end of the 2020–21 season.[14] He had previously been a part of the team's 2017–18 pre-season training camp in Hungary and made appearances on an ad hoc basis during that season.[13][15][16] Thompson made 10 appearances before his release at the end of the 2020–21 season.[17]

FC Midtjylland[edit]

After a successful trial period, Thompson signed a one-year contract with Danish Superliga club FC Midtjylland on 15 July 2021.[18] He failed to make an appearance during the 2021–22 season and was an unused substitute on 29 occasions.[5] Thompson won a Danish Cup winner's medal by virtue of being an unused substitute in the shoot-out victory over OB in the Final.[19] He was released when his contract expired.[20]

Vendsyssel FF[edit]

On 1 February 2023, Thompson joined Danish 1st Division club Vendsyssel FF and signed a contract running until the end of the 2022–23 season.[21] He was an unused substitute during six matches and was released at the end of the season.[5][22]

Weymouth[edit]

On 2 November 2023, Thompson joined National League South club Weymouth on a contract running until January 2024.[23] Thompson's debut appearance, two days later, was his first competitive appearance since 27 April 2019.[8] His spell ended in January 2024,[24] after 9 appearances.[8]

Gloucester City[edit]

On 15 February 2024, Thompson transferred to National League North club Gloucester City.[25] He made 8 appearances during the remainder of the 2023–24 season,[5] which culminated in relegation.[26] Thompson signed a new contract at the end of the season.[27]

International career[edit]

Thompson was called into the Northern Ireland U15 squad for two friendlies versus Belgium in May 2014, but failed to make an appearance in either match.[28][29] He won 12 caps for England between U16 and U18 level.[30] Thompson was member of the U16 squad which won the 2015 Montaigu Tournament and was included in the squad for the 2016 UEFA European U17 Championship.[30] In March 2019, Thompson received his maiden call into the Northern Ireland U21 squad for training camp in Estepona and won his only cap with a start in a 1–0 win over Bulgaria.[31][32]

Coaching career[edit]

As of January 2024, Thompson was reported to be coaching at Chelsea.[24]

Personal life[edit]

Thompson's father Paul and older brother Conor also became goalkeepers.[33] Thompson is of Northern Irish descent.[4]
