Jayanta Kumar Ray (born 9 December 1934) is an eminent Indian scholar and National Research Professor of India.

Career[edit]

Previously, Professor Jayanta Kumar Ray occupied some prestigious positions, like the Chairman and Director of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies, and the National Fellow at the Indian Council of Social Science Research. He was Centenary Professor of International Relations, and Founder-Director of the Centre for South and Southeast Asian Studies, University of Calcutta; and also a Professor of Behavioural Sciences, Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi.

Contribution[edit]

He was the first Indian scholar to publish research studies on modern Indonesia, Thailand and East Pakistan, and to write a book in defence of acquisition of a limited nuclear deterrent by India. His writings on civil-military relations, politician-civil servant relations and internal colonialism in ex-colonial countries have attracted a good deal of praise.
