I have posted my article on the Wikipedia butylparaben main page.

I am going to work on butylparaben for my Wikipedia project. The current Wikipedia site for this chemical has two sentences of introductory, a "chembox", and a sentence on safety. I hope to expand upon these headlines, as well as create new ones following the “style guidelines for chemistry articles.” That being said I should find information, and create headlines for properties, occurrence, preparation, uses/reactions, history, safety, and TOXICOLOGY of butylparaben. More of an emphasis will be placed on toxicology, as that is the subject of this course, but at least a paragraph for each aforementioned topic should be done to get this Wikipedia page off to a good start.

As far as the toxicology is concerned, butylparaben has recently been receiving attention as a possible contributor to breast cancer. A study done with breast cancer tumors found significant levels of butylparaben in them, leading to a hypothesis that butylparaben could be causing breast cancer. This is significant because butylparaben is a chemical found in many cosmetics and can be absorbed through the skin.

Butylparaben is currently regulated by the FDA as a synthetic flavoring and adjuvant, and under the EPA by the TSCA. A literature review by the National Institute of Environmental Health has calculated that the average human is exposed to 37 ng/day of butylparaben; this figure will be kept in mind while discussing health concerns. Research on the toxicology of butylparaben has not been all bad, however, as it has not been found mutagenic by several short-term bioassays like the Ames test, comet assay etc..

Overall, I need to find more information on the chemistry of butylparaben (properties, reactions, preparation) but I am off to a great start so far.
