Cast and characters[edit]

Cast changes in 2011
Natalie Cassidy returned for one episode as Sonia Fowler.
Derek Martin was axed from his role as Charlie Slater.
Tanya Franks reprised her role of Rainie Cross.
Zöe Lucker departed from her role Vanessa Gold.
Jake Wood took a four-month break from his role of Max Branning.
Jamie Foreman joined the cast as Derek Branning.

The first half of the year encompasses departures for Glenda Mitchell (Glynis Barber), Connor Stanley (Arinze Kene), Charlie Slater (Derek Martin), Jim Branning (John Bardon) and Ronnie Branning (Samantha Womack).[1][2][3][4][5] Bunmi Mojekwu's departure from her role as Mercy Olubunmi was announced in May 2011[6] and whilst it was confirmed that Mercy's grandmother Grace Olubunmi (Ellen Thomas) would remain in the show,[7] she was written out of the show in 2012, having made her final appearance in September 2011. Cathy Murphy's decision to leave the show was announced in June, with her character Julie Perkins leaving in August.[8] It was announced in June 2011 that Neil McDermott had quit his role as Ryan Malloy and would depart in a "dramatic" storyline.[9] Departures for Darren Miller (Charlie G. Hawkins) and Vanessa Gold (Zöe Lucker) were announced on 30 April 2011, after seven years and one year on the show respectively.[10] Hawkins said how he "enjoyed [his] time at EastEnders immensely", whilst Lucker promised that Vanessa's exit storyline would be "exciting".[10] Darren's exit saw him jilt Jodie Gold (Kylie Babbington) on their wedding day, with his brother Mickey Miller (Joe Swash) returning for the event.[11] Babbington was later confirmed to leave the series, following Hawkins and Lucker's departures.[12] Stefan Booth was confirmed to be leaving his role of Greg Jessop in June 2011, stating that he was "disappointed" by the news.[13] Despite this, Booth was later confirmed to be returning for a single episode to conclude his storyline.[14] Ace Bhatti made a previously unannounced departure from the show in December when his character Yusef Khan was killed in a fire at the local bed and breakfast. Patsy Palmer announced she was pregnant with her fourth child and would be taking maternity leave in August 2010.[15] Her character Bianca Butcher left the series in January 2011 and Palmer revealed in July that she had signed a 'working mums' contract, with Bianca returning in December 2011.[16] To aid Bianca's temporary departure, Natalie Cassidy returned to her role as Sonia Fowler for a single episode.[17] Laurie Brett also announced her pregnancy in January 2011, with her character Jane Beale leaving the series in May and returning in November.[18] Jake Wood, who has played Max Branning since 2006, took a four-month break from the show in August, with Wood citing his reasons for leaving as being "tired" and that he "needed a break".[19]

Rachel Bright was cast in the role of Poppy Meadow, who appeared in two episodes as a guest character.[20] In May 2011, it was revealed that Bright was due to reprise her role in June.[21] Bright was axed from the show in October, with potential to return in the future.[12] Lily Harvey was cast as "cheeky youngster" Shenice Quinn, originally in a guest role.[22] Despite this, Harvey was invited back in a recurring capacity, returning to screens in August.[23] Anna Karen made another guest return to the show in April 2011 when her character Aunt Sal was visited by Ronnie Branning (Samantha Womack). Margaret Tyzack was announced to play Janine Butcher's (Charlie Brooks) elderly, rich grandmother Lydia Simmonds.[24] Tyzack withdrew herself from the role in April, with Crossroads star, Heather Chasen, replacing her.[25] The character's death was announced in May, for scenes to be aired in June.[26] The mother of Tanya Branning (Jo Joyner), Cora Cross was introduced in April, with Ann Mitchell cast in the role.[27] Tanya Franks returned to the role of Tanya's sister and Cora's daughter, Rainie Cross, alongside Cora.[27] Whilst Franks returned permanently, Mitchell only appeared in a four episode guest stint. However, Mitchell was later announced to be returning as a regular cast member.[28] Rainie left the series in December at the end of Franks' contract. An extension to the established Moon family — the father and half-brothers of Michael Moon (Steve John Shepherd) — were introduced across the summer of 2011.[29] David Essex was cast in the role of Michael's father, Eddie Moon, whom he has a "fractured" relationship with.[29] The casting of Eddie's sons, Tyler (Tony Discipline) and Anthony (Matt Lapinskas) was announced on 10 May 2011.[30] Lydia's estranged son, Norman Simmonds was introduced in July, with George Layton cast in the role.[31] An extension of the Mitchell family was announced on 7 June 2011 in the form of Billy Mitchell's (Perry Fenwick) granddaughter, Lola Pearce. Danielle Harold was cast in the role of Lola.[32] Dot Branning's (June Brown) estranged half-sister Rose Cotton was introduced in July, with Polly Perkins cast in the role.[33] Rose's son and love interest for Heather Trott (Cheryl Fergison), Andrew Cotton was introduced in August. Ricky Grover was cast in the role of Andrew and having appeared in a short guest stint, Grover returned as a regular cast member in December.[34][35] It was confirmed on 9 June 2011 that after a seventeen-year absence from the show, Nicola Stapleton would reprise her role as Mandy Salter, commenting that she was "looking forward to playing Mandy again".[36] Preeya Kalidas reprised her role of Amira Masood in October, with her and Syed Masood's (Marc Elliott) daughter Yasmin Masood joining the show alongside her.[37][38] To aid the return storyline of Amira, Ramon Tikaram returned to his role as Qadim Shah for eight weeks.[39] Derek Branning was announced to be returning to the show, with Jamie Foreman taking over the role from Terence Beesley who played him in 1996, on 26 August 2011.[40]

Max kicks the bathroom door down to find Tanya unconcious, thinking she has taken pills, although she has just fallen asleep. Tanya is reluctant to talk before admitting how sick she is. Tanya explains she never told him as she has seen the effects of cancer first hand, aware that an illness can rot away at a marriage. Max vows to stand by Tanya, putting his wedding ring back on. Cora questions Tanya about what happened to her husband. Tanya recalls how, while Cora was out drinking or gambling, Tanya had to sit and watch her father die, remembering how thin, pale and weak he became before finding a drawing William drew for Cora the day he died.
