Cast and characters[edit]

Cast in 1987
Peter Purves guest starred in two episodes as Martin Hunter.
Nick Berry continued his role as Simon Wicks.
Leslie Grantham continued his role as Den Watts.

The first character to be introduced in 1987 was Tina Hopkins, played by Eleanor Rhodes. Tina appeared for over seven months, joining in February and departing in September. Mehmet Osman (Haluk Bilginer) and Guizin Osman's (Ishia Bennison) three children, Emine Osman (Pelin Ahmet), Rayif Osman (Billy Hassan) and Murat Osman (Eddie Izzet), were introduced in February, appearing in a recurring capacity. The following month saw the introduction of Luke Willmott-Brown (Henry Power) and Sophie Willmott-Brown (Natasha Knight), the son and daughter of James Willmott-Brown (William Boyde). They departed again in July. Richard Ireson was cast as the area manager for Luxford & Copley brewery, Reg Sparrow, who appeared in a recurring role. Former Angels star, Kathryn Apanowicz was introduced as Yorkshire-Polish caterer, Magda Czajkowski. A feature storyline in 1987 was when young, single mother Mary Smith prostituted herself[1] resulting in the casting of Eileen O'Brien as Mary's mother, Edie Smith, and Ian Wilkinson as Mary's brother, Brendan Smith.[2] Barry Clark's (Gary Hailes) older brother, Graham Clark was introduced in June, played by future Minder star Gary Webster.[2] A love interest for Naima Jeffery (Shreela Ghosh), Farrukh (Sumar Khan) was also introduced. He appeared for several episodes in July, before returning in November to aid Naima's departure.[3] The head of the poorly-recieved[4] Karim family, Ashraf Karim (Tony Wredden) debuted in July ahead of the family's introduction the following year.[5] Christopher McHallem joined the show's cast in July as a modern-day hobo, Rod Norman, whilst Carmel Roberts' (Judith Jacob) family were introduced the same month.[5] The extended Roberts family consisted of Carmel's brother, Darren Roberts (Gary McDonald), and his two children, tearaway son Junior Roberts (Aaron Carrington) and toddler daughter Aisha Roberts, who was played by Jacob's real-life daughter, Aisha Jacob.[5] The idea was suggested by Julia Smith and Jacob found it hard to turn her down and to avoid confusion, Smith named the character Aisha.[5]The character of Donna Ludlow, played by Matilda Ziegler, was introduced in August. Originally seemingly unrelated to any characters, Donna was soon revealed to be the illegitimate daughter of Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) following her rape as a teenager.[2]

Established comedian Mike Reid guest starred in the show as the former boyfriend of Pat Wicks (Pam St. Clement), Frank Butcher, in September. The appearance led to positive feedback and Frank became a regular character, who would eventually become one of the show's most popular and iconic characters.[2] Blue Peter presenter Peter Purves guest starred in three episodes of the show in October as a TV presenter, Martin Hunter, making a documentary about East End life, featuring the residents of Walford.[6] David Gillespie joined the show's cast as Duncan Boyd, the local curate and love interest for Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean). Future BAFTA award-winning actor Jason Watkins began guest starring in the show as Gerry Fairweather, a yuppie estate agent, whilst Pip Miller joined the cast in December as the Osman family's new landlord, Alan McIntyre. David Scarboro continued to make several guest returns as Mark Fowler throughout the year, following his departure the previous year. Scarboro's last television appearance before his death in 1988 was his guest appearance in the show on Christmas Day 1987. John Altman also made several guest appearances throughout the year as Nick Cotton, following his departure the previous year.

Sally Sagoe was the first actor to make her final appearance during 1987 as her character, Hannah Carpenter, left the series in February. Oscar James, who played Hannah's estranged husband Tony Carpenter, and Paul J. Medford, who played their son, Kelvin Carpenter, left their roles to pursue other projects, with their exit scenes airing in May and September respectively. Following the axing of her on-screen partner the previous year, Shirley Cheriton left the series, with her character Debbie Wilkins leaving in May.[3] Original character, Naima Jeffery (Shreela Ghosh), left the series in November.[3] The character Dr Singh (Amerjit Deu) was written out of the series following Naima's departure as he had served his purpose of Naima's love interest. Jane How also departed from her role as Jan Hammond in 1987, following the end of the character's storyline.

The following is a full list of the EastEnders 1987 cast.

Willmott-Brown tells Arthur he is starting a 5-a-side football team for the Dagmar but Arthur is against him bringing in players who are not regulars in the pub so he decides to start the Vic's team and gets Barry to join, while Colin agrees to join the Dagmar's team and Barry tells Colin the Vic will beat the Dagmar.

Angie and Sharon move into the flat above the Dagmar. Den has not been seen but Lofty finds the envelope; it is for Simon from Den with the keys to the Vic's cellar; Sharon notices Den's suitcases have gone and when Angie comes to collect something, she notices Den's passport has also gone so people worry but Angie says Den only does what he wants to do. Angie tells Sharon that she and Den will reunite but Den will do all the chasing. Sharon talks to Magda about her relationship with Simon; Simon also talks to Magda, who says Simon and Sharon want different things and if he was in love with Sharon, he would be willing to wait for her. Simon and Sharon talk and agree that they should just be friends; after realising that Magda and Den's relationship is purely sexual with no commitment, Simon tells Magda he will keep her company while she waits for some friends. Tom is jealous when Arthur is invited to the London in Bloom prize-giving ceremony and he is not.

Tom tries to get a confession from Arthur about sabotaging the Vic's flowers so Arthur accuses Tom of sabotaging the Dagmar's; Arthur then finds out the Dagmar has come second. The Vic's 5-a-side team of Simon, Ian, Barry, Pete and Dr Sing lose 18–0 while the Dagmar's team win their match 3–1. Ali and Sue are visited by their landlord, Ashraf, who says he wants to sell the property but they can have first refusal; Sue says they cannot afford it and refuses to leave her home. Angie tells Magda that she wants Den back but she will first show him what he is missing. Den has been gone for a week so Pat, Lofty and Simon decide to come up with their own system to run the Vic. Sharon tells Magda that she and Simon are over but wonders if Simon wants her back; Simon asks Magda out and Sharon sees them kissing in the back of the Vic. Mary and her punk friends cause problems and one of them is taken to hospital after passing out from a mixture of alcohol and pills.

Arthur makes Lofty train and the punks laugh at them; a police officer moves them on though Carmel vouches that Mary lives locally; Mary takes a man, Rod Norman, to her flat and they get to know each other; after he invites her to a music fair, Mary tells Rod about when she got pregnant and that her child is nearly three years old and says she would not blame him if he wanted to leave. Another punk girl steals money from the shop till while Tina's back is turned and Tina panics when she realises it has gone. Sharon tells Michelle she will go to Majorca for her job with the travel agency. Angie tells Pat the Simon was kissing Magda so Pat warns Simon that he could be in trouble if Den finds out. Sue and Ali receive a letter ordering them to leave the flat and Carmel advises them to check with the Citizens Advice Bureau. Kathy is angry to receive a letter saying Ian has not been attending college; Ian plans to open a seafood stall on the market. Carmel moves into Tony's old flat.

Lofty forgets that it is Michelle's 18th birthday so he takes everyone's advice on what to buy her; Michelle meanwhile confides in Mary that she has not grown to love Lofty as she hoped and is unsure if she should have a baby with him; Lofty then gives Michelle a pile of gifts and Den calls the Vic to tell Lofty he has some champagne for Michelle; Michelle is not happy to receive Den's present. Kathy tells Pete that Ian made Tina tell Naima about the missing money; later, the punk girl enters the Vic when the door is meant to be locked and takes cash from the till. Simon tries but fails to sell his car. Rod tells Mary that he fancies her and she tells him about her overdue court fines for soliciting; he says he wants to help her but Mary cites examples of people who wanted to "help" her but things ended up worse, however, Rod meets his old friend, Carmel's brother Darren, and borrows money from him, which he gives to Mary to pay her fines. Sue and Ali discover that Ashraf is not legally allowed to evict them.

A 35-minute episode, broadcast at 11:30 pm as an extra episode for New Year's Eve.[63] In an unusual move for a pre-recorded television series, the chimes of Big Ben are integrated into this episode. Den brings a television into the bar of The Queen Victoria, 'watches' the chimes in their entirety, and the episode resumes.[64]
