List of Billboard Top Video Games number ones of 1982[edit]

The Billboard magazine logo.

The Billboard Top Video Games chart ranks the best-selling video games in the United States. Compiled by Billboard magazine, the chart was first published in the week ending September 11, 1982.[1] In 1982, there were three games that topped the 16 published charts. The first number-one game of the year was Berzerk,[1] developed by Stern Electronics and released for the Atari 2600 in August 1982. The final number-one video game of the year was Activision's Pitfall!, which spent the last six weeks of the year atop the chart.[2] The most successful video game of the year was Donkey Kong, which spent eight consecutive weeks at number one.

UKIE Games Charts[edit]

The UKIE Games Charts are a collection of charts ranking the most popular video games in the United Kingdom. Compiled and published weekly by GfK Chart-Track on behalf of the Association for UK Interactive Entertainment (UKIE), the charts are based on physical sales of games in the UK. The main chart published within the Ukie Games Charts is the Top 40 Entertainment Software chart (also known as the UKIE Games Chart or UK Video Games Chart), which ranks the total weekly sales of games on all platforms combined. In addition to this, charts are also compiled for individual platforms, both overall and separated by "full price" and "budget price" titles.

History[edit]

All music, software, hardware and accessories charts in the UK were originally published by Gallup. In March 1996, Chart-Track Ltd was founded by employees of the Gallup charts team, with the support of the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publisher's Association (ELSPA) and the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA), to take over the compilation and publishing of the UK video games and Irish music charts.[1] In 2010, ELSPA was rebranded as the Association for UK Interactive Association (UKIE), broadening its scope within the UK video game industry.[2]

Criticism[edit]

The UKIE Games Charts have been criticised by a number of commentators for failing to include digital sales of games in their rankings. In 2011, Valve stated that it would not allow for sales through the Steam digital platform (then estimated to comprise over half of the PC digital games market) to be included in any digital sales rankings for general release.[3] Speaking to MCV, head of Steam Jason Holtman suggested that "The idea of a chart is old", and claimed that "it's not super important for a publisher or developer to know how well everyone is doing".[4]

The discography of Thunder, an English hard rock band, consists of 11 studio albums, 32 live albums, 11 compilation albums, seven extended plays (EPs), 28 singles, eleven video albums, X music videos and Y other appearances. Thunder was formed in 1989 following the disbandment of Terraplane by vocalist Danny Bowes, lead guitarist Luke Morley and drummer Gary "Harry" James, who brought in second guitarist and keyboardist Ben Matthews and bassist Mark "Snake" Luckhurst to complete the lineup.[1] Working with producer Andy Taylor, the band released their debut studio album Backstreet Symphony in 1990, which reached number 21 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).[2][3] The album was reissued in the US in 1991, when it reached number 114 on the Billboard 200.[4] All five singles from the album reached the UK Singles Chart top 40.[2] Laughing on Judgement Day, released in 1992, reached number 2 on the UK Albums Chart (the highest position achieved by the band to date) and was certified gold by the BPI.[2][3] "A Better Man" was also the group's first single to reach the UK top 20.[2]

After Luckhurst left the band and was replaced by Mikael Höglund, Thunder released Behind Closed Doors in 1995, which reached number 5 in the UK.[2] The group's first compilation The Best of Thunder: Their Finest Hour (And a Bit) followed later in the year, reaching number 22 and receiving a silver certification from the BPI.[5][3] 1996's The Thrill of It All reached number 14 on the UK Albums Chart,[2] shortly before Höglund left due to ongoing family commitments. With Chris Childs brought in early the following year, Thunder released their first live album Live in 1998, which reached number 35 in the UK.[6] Giving the Game Away followed in 1999, reaching the UK top 50,[2] before the band announced that they were due to break up in 2000 after a farewell concert tour. Three live albums recorded on this tour – They Think It's All Over... It Is Now, Open the Window – Close the Door: Live in Japan and They Think It's All Acoustic... It Is Now – were issued between 2000 and 2001.

Thunder's breakup was short-lived and the band returned in 2002. The first studio album since their return, Shooting at the Sun, did not register on the UK Albums Chart, although the single "Loser" reached the UK Singles Chart top 50.[2] The Magnificent Seventh! followed in 2005, reaching number 70 in the UK and spawning the top 30 single "I Love You More Than Rock 'n' Roll".[2] A number of live albums documenting Thunder's annual Christmas performances were also self-released by the group during this period, while their former label EMI Records issued a range of compilation albums. The band released their eighth studio album Robert Johnson's Tombstone in 2006, which reached number 56 in the UK and featured the band's last (to-date) top-40 single in "The Devil Made Me Do It".[2] A trilogy of EPs followed between 2007 and 2008, culminating in the release of the band's ninth studio album Bang!, which charted in the UK at number 62.[2] Thunder broke up for a second time in 2009, citing commitment to other activities as the impetus to do so.

After a number of returns starting in 2011, Thunder released their tenth studio album Wonder Days in 2015. The album was a commercial success, giving the band their first UK Albums Chart top 10 since 1995 when it reached number 9 on the chart.[2] The 2017 follow-up, Rip It Up, reached number 3 on the UK Albums Chart, making it the second highest-charting album in the band's career after Laughing on Judgement Day in 1992.[2]
