Siesta Key Beaches[edit]
The beaches of Siesta Key in Sarasota, Florida have the finest and whitest sand in the world. Its almost as fine and white as talcum powder and it is also unique in that its cool to the touch even under the subtropical sun.
Siesta Key has received many honors for it’s powdery white beaches and is a favorite destination for tourists from the states United States as well as abroad.
Sand[edit]
The sand is crushed quartz and geologically originates from the Appalachian Mountains and flowed into the Gulf of Mexico millions of years ago, then moving down the coast to its present location.
It was awarded at the "Great International White Sand Beach Challenge" in 1987 for having the "whitest and finest sand in the world."
Area[edit]
Siesta Beach originally contained nine acres and approximately 1200 feet of Gulf frontage. The County purchased an additional 30 acres to the south in the 1970's. Since then the beach has grown to approximately 101 acres.
The Beach Pavillion[edit]
The Beach Pavilion was originally designed by Tim Siebert from the Sarasota School of Architects, and was dedicated in the spring of 1960. This building is also notable for its use of low maintenance materials.
