(Alexis Charles) As Lauren said, the page is definitely lacking important information. I think one thing that should be included is why this foundation needed to be started, so focusing on prevalence rates of depression, and anxiety in India and globally would be important to have as support in the background information.

Two resources I have found are:

  • Grover, S., Dutt, A., & Avasthi, A. (2010). An overview of Indian research in depression. Indian Journal of Psychiatry, 52(Suppl1), S178–S188. http://doi.org/10.4103/0019-5545.69231
  • Venkatesh, B. T., Andrews, T., Mayya, S. S., Singh, M. M., & Parsekar, S. S. (2015). Perception of stigma toward mental illness in South India. Journal of Family Medicine & Primary Care, 4(3), 449–453. https://doi-org.ezproxy.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/10.4103/2249-4863.161352

Questions/Comments :

  • Should we include background information on recent global trends to reduce stigma related to mental health since this foundation is apart of that movement?
    • Yes, mention this and link to a relevant article.
  • Since the foundation was started due to prevalence rates in India, but the foundation is now in the US should we include information about mental health in the US?
    • No need for this, and it would distract from your article, unless the foundation is concerned with the mental health of Indian immigrants to the US. You could include information about this. You should say why the foundation relocated to the US. J.R. Council (talk) 03:48, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

1) There really isn't much information on this topic in the article. So I think that's the biggest issue with this article. Information needs to be added so that the purpose and objectives of this foundation can be understood. There isn't even any comments on the talk page which shows that there hasn't been any work down on this article. 2) Unfortunately there aren't any journal articles on this foundation yet so I have only found credible web pages! Also, I saw that the actual website for the foundation is never referenced which makes it seem like the information on this topic didn't come from the website. There is quite a bit of information from the actual website itself that can be used so I think this would be a good reference too.

3) Does my second website look credible to you? Since it's such a new foundation, there isn't much information on it, but it seems like the information on it is all credible since it is a foundation and not a concept. Also, is it okay to use references that are already used in the article? Because it seems like they only took a little bit of information from their articles but there is a lot more that could be taken from the websites that are listed. Laurengrant19 (talk) 20:31, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

  • Yes. Business world for India looks credible. Definitely use the references in the existing article. Work around what's there, don't replace it. J.R. Council (talk) 04:14, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

1) The current wikipedia page is obviously very sparse, but the information that is there is also very vague. The description merely says it is an organization that "deals with mental health issues." This is not very specific as to how the organization is doing this. We don't know if they are offering therapy or distributing resources or starting new organizations or only raising awareness. There is no history of anything being added to the article, either.

2) I found two journal articles discussing how social media is changing the face of mental health treatment and how it can be used to our advantage. This could help make our case for why the Live Laugh Love Foundation should be more well-known.

  • Don't use this kind of language. It is not neutral. Sounds like you are advocating for the organization. Don't "make a case," just try to state facts in a nonjudgmental way. J.R. Council (talk) 04:14, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

3) Do you think, given our topic is not very present on wikipedia and isn't named specifically in journal articles, the articles we did find surrounding our topic are sufficient to provide further background on the topic? That way, the rest of our information specifically about the organization itself can be directly from their website. Serenacurran (talk)

  • If you can use journal articles to help establish the legitimacy of the organization, please do so. If the organization is credible, information from its website should be okay. If not credible, you should be writing about something else.
    • This wasn't really 2 questions as assigned.

J.R. Council (talk) 04:14, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

1) One problem with the current Live Love Laugh article is that is lacks a lot of information. It is very brief and only describes the bare minimum of the foundation such as who created it and that it is trying to raise awareness on mental health. It does not discuss things like why the organization was created and what it has accomplished so far.

2)Two sources:

Behere, P; Kumar, K & Behere, A. (2017). Depression: Why Talk? Indian Journal of Medical Research, 411-413.
Conard, P; Armstrong, M & Young, C. (2017). Unnoticed Heros Caring for Visible and Invisible Wounds of the Nation's Military Heroes. Medsurg Nursing, 365-385.
  • Again, these greyed-out blocks happen when you leave the first space blank. Don't do this! It isn't permissible formatting.

The first article discusses the founder of the foundation, Deepika Padukone, and how she is trying to spread awareness on depression and anxiety. The second article lists the Live Love Laugh foundation as a resource to help people define their feelings.

3) One question I have for you is if you have any recommendations on where to find credible sources or articles on this foundation. It is a newer idea so I am struggling to find a few good sources with information that will be beneficial to add to the existing Wikipedia article.

  • As I said above, if the website seems credible, you can use information from there. Does the website have a bibliography?
  • Just thought of this for this group. You can also use the Wikipedia translate function to look at the Indian Wikipedia page. Maybe you can find some articles that have appeared in Indian publications. J.R. Council (talk) 04:14, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

Also the two sources I have are credible and they work, but they only talk about the Live Love Laugh foundation for a sentence or two, do you think they’re worth keeping? Lcapp (talk) 23:20, 5 October 2018 (UTC)

Assignment 5[edit]

Great job Group 3! So far, this looks really really good. You have a lot of information to add, and you are very well organized. If you get this article done a couple of weeks before the end of the semester, I think it could be considered as an article to be highlighted as new and notable. J.R. Dr. Council's comments[edit]

You've done a really nice job on this. There's more information on topic than I expected, so this article could be fairly long. This lead is a good size and amount of detail for your topic.

  • By some judicious editing, you could make this more concise and readable.
  • "Its" is possessive, "It's" is a contraction for "it is."
  • "Monumental" is a value judgment. Not acceptable in Wikipedia.
  • Add links to relevant terms mentioned in the lead, like depression.
  • If you haven't started already, please proceed to writing the main body of the article. Just flesh out the lead, and add additional information at the appropriate spots.
    • Be sure to break your article into its main parts, and add section and subsection titles to organize and make it easy for the reader to follow.

The Live Laugh Love Foundation (Main Article)[edit]

The Live Love Laugh Foundation is a non-profit organization created to reduce stigma and raise awareness about the prevalence of mental health issues in India. The foundation was started by Deepika Padukone, an Indian actress, after being diagnosed with depression and anxiety. India has some of the highest depression and suicide rates in the world; however, it lacks mental health professionals or adequate resources to battle this issue. The major mental health concerns the foundation addresses are stress, depression, and anxiety. The foundation's main goal is to increase mental health resources in India and educate people on the issues facing populations in increasing numbers. It has previously made strides towards mental health education in India and is now spreading to countries around the world.[1] Serenacurran (talk)

Founder and background[edit]

The Live Laugh Love Foundation was founded by Deepika Padukone, an Indian actress who suffers from depression, along with a board of trustees. [2] She created this foundation to bring more awareness to mental health and to reduce the stigma of it in India. One reason Padukone decided to create this foundation is because, “In India, 90 percent of people who suffer from depression don’t seek help.”[3] Padukone uses social media as a tool to encourage others to share their personal experiences/stories with mental illness, using the hashtag, #NotAshamed. The year after Padukone founded the Live Love Laugh Foundation, she launched a campaign called "More Than Just Sad" to assist general physicians in properly treating patients suffering from depression or anxiety. Padukone is also the brand ambassador for the NGO Indian Psychiatric Society, which is the largest association of Indian psychiatrists.[4]

There are currently only 3,500 psychiatrists in India, with even fewer psychologists. This makes a ratio of three psychiatrists to every million people. India has the highest rate of depression at 36%, as well as the highest suicide rate of any country in the world.[5]

There are many challenges that people in India face regarding mental health and its stigma. In India, mental illness is seen as a disability and those with a mental illness are discriminated against. It is common for families to be against seeking help for any sort of mental health issue.[6] A sense of denial is another challenge. People may think they are in control of helping themselves which limits them from reaching out to others for help. Receiving therapy is seen as a weakness so it is not common to get help from professionals. Along with this, insurance does not cover issues with mental health, which adds to why people will not seek professional help. Another challenge the people of India face is limited education on mental health. In rural areas, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder is seen as demon possession.[7]

Focus[edit]

The focus of the Live Love Laugh Foundation is to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental health. The foundation spreads awareness and changes the way people look at mental health in general. It provides a platform that enables people who are seeking help to learn more information and connect with mental health professionals. People are able to share and hear others' stories of their own experiences with mental health.[8]

Areas served[edit]

The foundation was first implemented in India, which is still the location for most of the foundation’s current projects. The foundation was first founded in 2015 and since then, programs have been added in Ahmedabad, Baroda, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Delhi, and Mumbai. They conduct programs in four different languages including English, Hindi, Tamil, and Gujarati. There are currently therapists available on the Live Laugh Love Foundation website to give mental health resources, representing 14 different states. [9] (information was taken from their website and can’t be independently verified)

The foundation has raised support from countries all around the world because of the publicity it has gained and its accessibility of the donation page on its website. Its presence on social media has caused the foundation to become known and well supported in the United States.[10]

Social media use[edit]

The Live Laugh Love Foundation has used personal testimonies of peoples' journeys with mental illness and recovery stories to inspire those seeking help and instill in other not be ashamed to speak up about mental health. These stories encourage others seeking treatment to talk to someone directly and to find a therapist in their area. Incorporating the #NotAshamed hashtag, these testimonies have made appearances on social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. These pages are open to the public to raise awareness for the program and for unity among individuals seeking treatment. Many social media users have interacted with these pages and have been redirected to the foundation’s website, where they could then learn more, donate, or find treatment for themselves. #YouAreNotAlone school program:[edit]

The #YouAreNotAlone school program works to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health by educating both teachers and students on mental health topics. This program has reached over 400 schools across India and in total, it covers over 13,000 teachers and 80,000 students. The program is currently in Ahmedabad, Baroda, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Delhi, and Mumbai.[13]

Student outreach: The student outreach aspect educates students on how disorders may affect them or their classmates. The program teaches self-help strategies, and works to increase empathy to better support others.[13]

Teacher outreach: The teacher aspect of the program provides teachers with the proper tools to identify signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety, so that they can identify struggling students and refer them to receive adequate help from professionals.[13]

General practitioner (GP) training program:[edit]

The Live, Love, Laugh Foundation (TLLLF) believes general practitioners can be the first contact point for identifying mental health conditions. This program is a two hour training created to provide proper information to those in the program to enable them with the tools to give support to patients. This program is also part of the way TLLLF tries to raise awareness and reduce stigma surrounding mental health.[14]
