Murkshore[edit]

Murkshore is a city not unlike Gotham City[1]. While it started out like any old city, over time it became corrupt and overrun with crime. High-up people and businessmen in the city have taken control of the government, controlling officials and elections. Because of this, the city and its residents have been neglected. All of this has led to high crime rates and disaster after disaster happening in Murkshore.

Gotham City

The government of Murkshore profits off the city being in such a state so nothing is being done to improve Murkshore.

History[edit]

Murshore was a normal city until recently, the corruption only sprang up in the past couple decades. It began with a few businessmen and politicians at the top becoming more focused on their own profits over the lives of the people and has worsened from there. In present-day Murkshore every aspect of government is corrupt at some level and is being puppeteered by those in powerful offices. The increased focus on profit has come at the detriment to the people of the city and the rate of crime has increased at an exponential pace up to the present-day.

Music[edit]

Musrkshore can be described through the song “Master of Puppets”[2] by Metallica. The song describes a person, the puppet master, controlling someone and ruining their life. The government in Murkshore can be seen as the person being controlled, in this case. Since powerful people in the city have taken control, the government has become powerless and corrupt, being controlled like the “puppet” in this song.

Daily Life[edit]

Despite high crime, residents of Murkshore try to live their daily lives as normal as possible. As a major city, Murkshore has lots of businesses and industries that run out of it, although they have been largely impacted by the corruption. Most people in the city spend the day working their normal jobs, wether this be at one of these large companies, working in a restaurant, or at a small business, and try to take their mind of the happenings in the city when they can. While the corrpution of the government has touched almost all aspects of life in Murkshore, some parts have been less impacted than others. People who know the right places to look will find budding underground scenes for many things including music and art, allowing them to escape from busy life in the city.

Hostages at the Bank[edit]

One major accident that happened in Murkshore was an armed hostage situation at the bank. The crime running through the city had been going unchecked for a long time, and more and more tragedies were taking place. When a group of gunmen showed up at the bank one day, demanding money, all the people in the bank were taken hostage. The police were called, but the government's failure in Murkshore meant that not enough measures were taken to prevent the situation from escalating and the hostages were killed.

Character-Sybil[edit]

Sybil is an aspiring rock star turned modern-day witch stuck in the past. Growing up and spending most of her life in Murkshore, she has a troubling history. Greatly impacted by the corruption behind Murkshore’s government, she has become closed off, mysterious, and independent to a fault.

Backstory[edit]

Growing up in Murkshore, Sybil has spent her life watching the government and city become more and more corrupt. She spent most of her life listening to and playing music, finding an escape from her changing environment in it. Her entire life, she has dreamed of being a rock star, leading her own band, and touring the world. While the band she started in Murkshore was beginning to take off, everything changed after the tragedy at the bank. Sybil had a relatively normal childhood up until the corruption of Murkshore started to take a toll. As crime began to rise and more and more things happened around the city, she began to try to protect herself. This came to a climax with the armed hostage situation in the bank. When this was taking place, the other members of Sybil’s band were at the bank waiting for a meeting. Sybil was on her way to the meeting when she heard about the hostages. Unfortunately, due to the neglect of the government, her other band members died in this tragedy. Seeing how far the city that Sybil knew was gone and losing the people close to her, she began to pull back and isolate herself. Turning to witch hood and music for any kind of distraction, Sybil learned about all the different aspects of being a witch. She finally realized that what she needed was to get out of Murkshore completely. Leaving her whole life and past behind, she moves to a new city hoping to start again and go on a new adventure, which is where we meet her in this campaign.

Personality[edit]

Because of how she was affected by the crime scene at the bank, Sybil is very closed off and independent. After losing her bandmates, she is afraid to form connections with people in Murkshore so as not to lose them again. She has closed herself off from most new people and keeps to herself. Most people around Murkshore think of her as very mysterious and distant from society. This once very outgoing and charismatic rock star on the rise is now dark and closed off. Sybil finds comfort in her music, although she long abandoned her dream of starting a music career in Murkshore after the accident. Instead, she dedicates her free time to learning more about being a witch.

Wicca[edit]

After isolating herself from others, Sybil took an interest in Wicca[3]. In this pagan religion, Wiccans tend to worship one or more gods or goddesses and are often called witches. Although Sybil is new to Wicca and the world of witchcraft, she is a strong believer in magic and is eager to learn more. She took a special interest in this religion because many Wiccans use their magic to banish negative powers in their life. After the loss of her band members and the rising crime in Murkshore, she felt this kind of power was exactly what she needed.

Playlist[edit]

Sybil’s personality and her growth throughout our campaign can be described in five songs. These would be “Immigrant Song”[4] by Led Zeppelin, “Rhiannon[5]” by Fleetwood Mac, “In the Woods Somewhere”[6] by Hozier, “My Way, Soon”[7] by Greta Van Fleet, and “She’s Not Afraid”[8] by One Direction.

Character-Roslyse[edit]

Roslyse is a normal citizen turned vigilante. Where in the past she fell back on family, growing up in Murkshore after the hostage situation has caused her to become more self-interested and self-reliant.

Background[edit]

Roslyse’s life in Murkshore was relatively uneventful until the hostage situation at the bank. Her family were hostages killed in the incident and this put her on a path of revenge against those she felt were responsible. Roslyse became a vigilante because this event was her tipping point, she became fed up with all the ramifications of Murkshore’s corruption, and to hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions because she knew the government would neglect to hold anyone accountable for such an event. She got her revenge, but her tactics and her resentment towards the government have resulted in Roslyse choosing to continue her path of vigilante justice and now she hops around to different places, wherever she hears there might be issues that she is capable of handling.

Personality[edit]

Roslyse is a very independent and self-concerned individual, she believes in the philosophy that rules are suggestions and she thinks they’re very bad suggestions. Her family’s deaths sowed within her  a deep distrust in authority and caused her to become obsessive about getting revenge her own way and, in a place as corrupt as Murkshore, that meant she could trust only herself and had to put her own well-being first. This development also led to Roslyse acquiring a ”shoot first, ask questions later” mentality which has gotten her out of some sticky situations, but into others. Roslyse sticks to her principles and sees them as one of the things in her life that cannot be negotiated. She will stick to her principles even when it means doing things others find morally dubious or if it results in her fighting a losing battle, she will sooner die then forsake them. Many in Murkshore secretly applaud her for stepping up to cut out corruption where she sees it and will deny that they saw her dart away when law enforcement comes looking for her.

Though she delights in doling out justice Roslyse wants to live her life without any regrets, so whenever she has the chance she kicks back in bars drinking spirits and playing darts or partakes in western novels and films from the comfort of her inn room. Relaxing in bars also brings the added benefit of Roslyse overhearing what could be her next job.

Weapons[edit]

A person may be able to catch Roslyse unaware, but they won’t catch her without a firearm on her. She has at least one of her weapons on her at all times, typically more than one. When she was little her mother taught her how to use a BB-gun and her father imparted his love of western novels and films onto her. Her decision to use firearms was made largely because she felt sculpting her new identity around her parents paid homage to them and eliminating the perpetrators using things that the victims, her parents, loved, she would be enacting justice in a more meaningful way.

Playlist[edit]

Roslyse’s personality and story can be described in the following five songs: Renegade Runaway[9], Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)[10], Welcome to the Black Parade[11], One Last Drink[12], and Defying Gravity[13].
