On 24 December 1969, almost 200 opponents of President Francisco Macias Nguema were rounded up at the National Stadium in Malabo, the capital city of Equatorial Guinea and executed by soldiers dressed in Santa Claus costumes while Mary Hopkin's "Those were the Days" played over the stadium address system.

150 were executed by the soldiers while 36 others were buried in the pitch and left to be eaten by a colony of red ants.
