Health Risk[edit]

Introduction[edit]

In the United States health care is very expensive, we don't have the luxury of universal health care. We use health insurance as a payment plan that protects us from paying the full cost of medical services if you ever fall sick or injured. Not having health insurance makes the cost of health care expensive because physicians are able to charge you full price. Cash based medical care costs are higher than those paid by the insurance, making foreigners less ready to pay for the health care they need. Lack of health insurance can roughly cost you 35million dollars a year! Lack of health insurance is a lack in health care. According to Access To Primary Care, the lack of health insurance decreases your chances of preventive and primary care resulting in poor health outcomes. Most people who lack health insurance are the impoverished population, half of the immigration population lacks health insurance. The lack of immigrants not having health insurance most of the time result in facing barriers when it comes to health care and most of the time pay out of pocket money to receive care.

Article Body[edit]

Sick Immigrants

Close to 900,000 immigrants live in the Central Valley, with 20% of the population lacking health insurance many rely on free health care clinics or don't see physicians at all. Not only does half the immigrant; population in the Central Valley lack health insurance, the Central Valley itself is Medically underserved. The lack of access to medical treatment in the Central Valley is very crucial to the immigrant population and the uninsured. Having close primary care is essential to maintaining one's health. Many immigrants without health care coverage inclusion, a serious case or a medical problem that results in an emergency or potentially an expensive treatment plan can bring about helpless credit. Driving miles away to clinics are not really options for immigrants who are uninsured or work long hours at their jobs. Immigrants are faced with choosing their health or work and since most immigrants come to the Central Valley with family, they usually choose going to work. On the other hand living conditions were extremely terrible, high rates of disease, helpless admittance to mind and a deficiency of medical care suppliers. Workers coming from an alternate setting were probably going to contract one of an assortment of sicknesses from the adjustment of environment and openness to various individuals. They really struggle to make money with very little pay, so in this case many immigrants are not able to get good health insurance. This leads them to get sick and most of the time their insurance can offer it.

Social and Environmental Determinants of Health in San Joaquin Valley[edit]

A study was conducted in analyzing indicators of population health[1]. The study analyzed childhood morbility, elderly populations access to health care, and reproductive health. The study found that there are high rates in people of color teen birthing that are in low income regions that have high pollution rates and few economic opportunities. San Joaquin Valley residents are more likely to die at the age of 65 compared to California's whole population. If children of color had the similarities preventable hospitals rates as their white peers, there would be lower cases of children in poverished areas and a decrease in children who do not have access to health care.

Effects and Response[edit]

The health disparities that immigrants face in not only the Central Valley but are faced with around the world shape how children and their children will view health. The absence of access in the Central Valley ahs been critical to maintaining health. Traveling for care could be difficult for immigrant families who work long hours, being uninsured makes care expensive and most people who don't have insurance aren't likely to prioritize their health, and though there is insurance like the Affordable Care Act families still find it difficult to maintain care and have preferences of care. The Berkeley Interdisciplinary Migration took initative to map healthcare facilities and demand healthcare facilities across the Central Valley to Identify the gaps in healthcare. The Berkeley Institute provided graphs and mapped out cities with uninsured resident. With information stakeholders and policymakers can work to meet the needs of the underserved.

Gaps Between Demand & Supply[edit]

  • Stockton has the largest foreign born uninsured population
  • Fresno is Second
  • San Joaquin and Fresno have the worst health care for immigrants
