Category?[edit]

Do we want to set up a category, into which pages with this banner would be added? -- Gyrofrog (talk) 20:42, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there should be a category for Jazz articles in the project. --Eqdoktor 09:09, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. BNutzer 10:23, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Pages with this banner are now automatically added to Category:WikiProject Jazz articles. BNutzer 22:54, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for setting that up! Is there some 'bot that can go through and update the "listas=" parameter in the {{WPBiography}} template? Otherwise, since these are all talk pages, they all sort under "T" by default. Thanks again, -- Gyrofrog (talk) 00:36, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Kingbotk? Btw, they are were only sorted under "T" if they don't have a WPBiography "listas=" flag at all (also true if they don't have a WPBio banner). They are were listed under "First character of article name" if there is an empty "listas=" set in the WPBio banner. Fascinating ;) BNutzer 06:19, 7 August 2007 (UTC), updated ~ 22:18, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Putting {{DEFAULTSORT}} on the talk page will also sort them correctly. I think it should be put at the top of the talk page ... BNutzer 08:43, 8 August 2007 (UTC), updated ~ 22:13, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed DEFAULTSORT usage from the template. All articles are now listed under their name in the project categories. Using a listas parameter might be an idea, but wouldn't that mean overdoing it (my impression is that hardly anyone is interested anyway)? BNutzer 22:13, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, just wondering about musicians with Arabic names. For the purposes of sorting this category, I propose we sort by the second name (i.e. what appears to be a last name). Traditionally these names should be sorted by the first letter in the first name, e.g. "Idris Muhammad" would be under "I". On the other hand, I think my hard copy of the AMG (I don't have it with me) lists him under "M". I am guessing that Idris Muhammad, if he is in the phone book, would be under "M"; I'm almost positive that a record store would file his CDs under "M". (WP:MOS-AR isn't clear about this, and an archived discussion suggests addressing it on a case-by-case basis (while also suggesting that Wikipedia needs a guideline for this)). -- Gyrofrog (talk) 14:24, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Subcategories?[edit]

Now that the category exists, it is possible to have subgategories, too ... and they could be filled by additional flags that this template could also support ...

Albums[edit]

With album articles getting tagged for the project, maybe an "album" flag in the template would be wise that automatically puts those articles into a subcategory for album articles. BNutzer 10:25, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I still think an albums subcategory would be nice. Any other views on this? BTW, I am beginning to think that this discussion should better be taken to the project talk page, and we should restrict the discussion here to rather technical aspects of the template ... BNutzer 20:26, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Implemented. Syntax: |album=yes BNutzer 11:55, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I did notice, however, that they are still in the parent "WikiProject Jazz" category. (My assumption is that one purpose of the "Album" category is to thin out the parent category.) -- Gyrofrog (talk) 12:48, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(un-indent)My pleasure, you are welcome ;) Thinning out was not my orginal purpose - it was "browsability" rather, and that can be found in the subcategory. And I think it makes some sense to have the parent category contain all tagged project articles. Other projects also do that (e.g. Albums project, WPBiography musicians work group formerly known as Musicians project). What does everybody else think about that? Should articles with the album flag show only in the albums subcategory or also stay in the parent category? Another discussion for the project talk page I guess. But I have to act in the offline world for a few hours now, so no time for syntax research now. BNutzer 13:14, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Default sort key in categories[edit]

{{WPBiography}} sets the magic word {{DEFAULTSORT}} for a talk page based on the template's listas parameter: with an empty listas= the sort key will be {{PAGENAME}}, with a listas=value, the sort key will be value. I would like to have {{Jazz-music-project}} set the sort key for the talk page to {{PAGENAME}} if {{DEFAULTSORT}} is not set for the talk page yet (to have the talk page not be sorted under 'T'). In other words: Don't touch the default sort key, if a template or editor has already set it, otherwise do {{DEFAULTSORT:{{PAGENAME}} }}. So far, I have not yet understood how to code that. Any help or comment would be appreciated. Regards, BNutzer 13:48, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Template_talk:WPBiography#Attempt_to_summarise_the_above_.28DEFAULTSORT.2C_listas.2C_PAGENAME.29 seems to indicate that using DEFAULTSORT in templates should be avoided. So I would like to use WPBiography's listas value if its present on the talk page, otherwise use PAGENAME as sort key. Is it possible at all to have one template read a parameter value from another template that is present on a (talk) page? BNutzer 07:52, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, not possible.↔NMajdantalk 13:36, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Template parameters[edit]

Album and song categories[edit]

(Cross-posted to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Jazz/Archives/2009 1#Jazz-music-project template) I noticed that the "album=" and "song=" categories had been removed from {{Jazz-music-project}} ([1]), which in turn led me to notice that Category:WikiProject Jazz album articles and Category:WikiProject Jazz composition articles had been blanked (i.e., removed from Category:WikiProject Jazz articles) and subsequently deleted. I'm just wondering why this occurred (I can't find any relevant discussion). -- Gyrofrog (talk) 16:56, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have gone ahead and restored the sub-categories, and restored the parameters to the template. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 16:23, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have added a blank space as sort key in both categories, e.g. [[Category:WikiProject Jazz articles| ]] so that the two now show on the first page of Category:WikiProject Jazz articles. BNutzer (talk) 19:17, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment classes[edit]

And I have added an explanation to the documentation concerning the assessment classes which have been available and used since the inclusion of {{WPBannerMeta}} (if I am not mistaken). Also, I have removed the fairly obsolete old "Usage" section from the template. BNutzer (talk) 18:53, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

listas=[edit]

FYI: I have just tested to find out that the template also supports setting a "listas" parameter:Talk:Babik Reinhardt shows in Category:Unassessed Jazz articles under "R" after adding "listas=Reinhardt, Babik" - without that, it showed in "B". BNutzer (talk) 20:39, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

But unlike {{WPBiography}} (WPB), {{Jazz-music-project}} (JMP) does *not* set the talk pages DEFAULTSORT to PAGENAME if listas is not set in the template. I think that means: If JMP with listas set follows WPB without listas, JMP wins. If WPB without listas follows JMP with listas, WPB wins. Confusing, isn't it. BNutzer (talk) 20:50, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Biography parameter[edit]

This template should have a parameter for biographies. Roger (talk) 20:38, 3 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

I think the template name should be "Template:WikiProject Jazz" and we should have a fairly standard redirect at "Template:WP-Jazz". Seems standard from other projects. Not to be confused with WP:JAZZ which is a navigation template. See "Template:WikiProject Tennis", the redirect at Template:WP-Tennis (Select the "redirected from" link); then the portal template at Template:TennisPortal. -- I will wait a week to see what the project thinks. - Mjquin_id (talk) 05:11, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Template usage[edit]

Please see the discussion archived at WT:JAZZ/Archives/2010#WP:JAZZ template and project scope regarding the suggested use of this template. Thanks, -- Gyrofrog (talk) 19:40, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox requests[edit]

This template has a "needs-infobox=" parameter, which when set to "yes" places the article within Category:Jazz articles needing infoboxes. {{WikiProject Biography}} also has that parameter (which places the page within Category:Biography articles without infoboxes). It seems redundant to set this to "yes" for both banners, but that's what I've been doing in order for the page to appear in the relevant categories. Recently I've seen this parameter usage replaced with {{Infobox requested}}, which places the page within Category:Wikipedia articles with an infobox request but does not otherwise specify WP:JAZZ, WP:BIO etc.

This leads me to my question, is there a way to set up this template so that it will detect other infobox requests (whether in {{WikiProject Biography}}, {{Infobox requested}}, or elsewhere) so that the page will still be placed in "Cat:Jazz articles needing infoboxes"?

(On a related note, "Cat:Jazz articles needing infoboxes" was not a subcat of "Cat:Wikipedia articles with an infobox request" until I placed it there a moment ago.)

I'm also thinking about asking a 'bot to go through Category:Jazz and update the talk pages of articles that don't have infoboxes, but that's a discussion for another time and place. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 18:34, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
