Bailiwicks[edit]

It is not possible, in the small space available, to give a complete list of every officer's job title that might be held by (for example) an Officer Grade 5. I have tried to supply a few of the most commonly encountered options, as examples. The same holds true for all ranks. When it comes to appointments and/or ranks which include the word "County" I have said "or District" because more than 12 million people live within the boundaries of London District, and it is therefore a phrase that they are likely to encounter. Whilst I accept the mathematics of User:PoisonedPigeon's argument (there are two Bailiwicks and only one District) I don't think the argument holds water on a common sense front. The District is our national capital, whilst the two Bailiwicks are relatively sparsely populated islands. The title only exists because those islands don't constitute or contain Counties. In short, it is a bit of a red herring. I have therefore reverted to the original text, which will be more helpful to the great majority of readers, but I have also added a footnote about Bailiwicks. I would suggest that this is a more sensible arrangement. Timothy Titus Talk To TT 19:43, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The twelve million people argument holds true when talking about people looking for the administrative areas' headquarters, but not when talking about rank insignia. There is only one District Commissioner, and only one District Commander. Therefore the probability of encountering them is smaller than that of encountering a Bailiwick Commissioner or Commander. The St John Ambulance Supplies page about the rank marking itself (http://www.stjohnsupplies.co.uk/products/default.asp?productId=U14158) makes no reference to District, so I don't think it deserves a special mention. County is quite sufficient. PoisonedPigeon (talk) 20:04, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
