US Jack?[edit]

Wouldn't it be more appropriate for {{navy|USA}} to display the Jack of the United States instead of the Flag of the United States? It would be consistant with all of the other nations displaying thier naval jack instead of thier national ensign. bahamut0013 18:59, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What are "all of the other nations", and on which articles? I am fairly sure that naval ensigns and not naval jacks are used exclusively by this template, per consensus at WP:WikiProject Ships. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:29, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Look at Template:Navy/doc. The US is one of the few nations that display the national flag instead of the naval flag.
 United States Navy , as opposed to  Royal Navy ,  People's Liberation Army Navy ,  German Navy, and  Kriegsmarine for example. bahamut0013 01:51, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're missing the point. All of those examples use naval ensigns—including the United States. The US (and a few other countries) also use the standard flag as the ensign. The naval jack of a country is used in different situations. Jacks and ensigns are not equivalent; see WP:WikiProject Ships/Ensigns for details. And as I pointed out, WikiProject consensus is to use ensigns for this template and its transclusions. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 05:06, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, see, I guess I just assumed that there would be a different maritime flag, instead of just the national flag. I don't have much of an excuse for fixating on the jack. bahamut0013 10:56, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oman[edit]

At present {{navy|Oman}} breaks, it needs to link to Royal Navy of Oman 86.31.47.149 (talk) 23:02, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

{{editprotected}}

Please add a hatnote with wiki link to Template:Navy (color).

Change this:

{{country data {{{1}}}
| country flagnavy
| variant = {{{variant|{{{2|}}}}}}
| size = {{{size|}}}
| name = {{{name|}}}
}}<noinclude>{{documentation}}</noinclude>

To this:

<noinclude>{{For|the template that changes text color|Template:Navy (color)}}</noinclude>{{country data {{{1}}}
| country flagnavy
| variant = {{{variant|{{{2|}}}}}}
| size = {{{size|}}}
| name = {{{name|}}}
}}<noinclude>{{documentation}}</noinclude>

Thanks. --Lightsup55 ( T | C ) 13:15, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 14:52, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kaiserliche Marine[edit]

The template needs altering to allow the Kaiserliche Marine to be linked. Mjroots (talk) 14:25, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

{{navy|German Empire}} already does that. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 05:35, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've added that one to the examples so that other editors will know how to use is. Mjroots (talk) 08:16, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Older templates[edit]

Need templates for the pre-1994 South African Navy please. (See SAS President Kruger (F150) for examples) as this usage is incorrect. Socrates2008 (Talk) 11:08, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Already exists. Use {{navy|South Africa|1952}} (or 1922, 1946, or 1981) to get the desired naval flag variant. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:53, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

US Navy flag should be changed to actual Navy flag[edit]

{{editprotected}} To somewhat revisit a point brought up a couple years ago by bahamut the US template simply displays the US Flag as it also happens to be the US Navy's ensign. The problem with this is that it constantly duplicates flags in military info boxes, doesn't serve the reader and runs contrary to the other service's templates and info box entries. The flags of the US Navy and the US Coast Guard are NOT their ensigns. The Navy's flag is shown here. All the other services (except the Coast Guard) use their actual flags. I understand the tizzy that WikiProject Ships got into over the years over jack vs ensign and settled on a consensus to use ensigns but this is outside the scope that project. It would be like WikiProject Aircraft dictating that the flag of the Department of the Air Force be it's Roundel on all templates. It just doesn't make much sense. Both the Coast Guard and Navy's template flags should be changed to their actual flags.TomPointTwo (talk) 22:49, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds reasonable. As this has been discussed before and may be controversial, it would be as well to let this proposal sit for a few days to allow others to comment. Please replace the request when you have consensus. By the way, you forgot to pipe your link to here. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:57, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, so I did. Thanks. TomPointTwo (talk) 15:05, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree with this. If you need images of the service flags, just link to them. I think thier use in most cases (especially infoboxes) is iconcruft anyway. The point I argued a few years ago was about the Jack vs. ensign, not service flags at all; the United States doesn't maintain ensigns for its army or air force, so the comparison is invalid. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 21:24, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well your feelings on what is or is not icon cruft aside my underlying point is that the flag of the US Navy is not the US Ensign. To have the ensign displayed as representative of the Navy is simply incorrect. I understand as well that the US Army and Air Force do not use ensigns (another reason not to use the Navy ensign here) but the roundel serves much the same purpose in the Air Force so I felt it was an appropriate comparison. That it makes it harder on the editor, confuses the reader and complicates info boxes is just extra reason to make the change. TomPointTwo (talk) 04:46, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense. A lot of countries, such as the U.S., Iraq, etc., just use their national flag as their ensign, so this template is just redundant. Better to use the flag of the branch itself. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 06:08, 23 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Display without wikilink[edit]

Is it possible to have a display so that clicking on the flag links to the article, without having to use the {{click}} workaround? - i.e. instead of  Royal Navy, have it displayed as Royal Navy Royal Navy. Mjroots (talk) 06:00, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Royal Indian Navy[edit]

How does one use this template for Royal Indian Navy ships? Mjroots (talk) 13:35, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

{{navy|British India}} — Preceding unsigned comment added by 168.161.192.12 (talk) 18:18, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks! Mjroots (talk) 20:23, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

French Navy[edit]

The French Navy used File:Flag of French-Navy-Revolution.svg as its flag from 1790-94. So, can someone please fix {{navy|France|1790}} so that it displays the correct flag? Mjroots (talk) 18:20, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Italy[edit]

It seems as though {{navy|Italy}} should display as: Italian Navy, instead of the current  Italian Navy, for two reasons: First, there is no page for Marine Militare, only a redirect to Italian Navy. It seems to me that templates should link to actual pages instead of redirects where possible. And second, other variations of this template use translated English-language names (as this is an English language wiki), not their endonymic ones, i.e.:  French Navy (not Marine nationale) and  Spanish Navy (not Armada Española).

Template usage[edit]

Hi. Where should this template be used and not used? Is it meant specifically for ship infoboxes or is it for use in something like Infobox military person? Thanks Gbawden (talk) 11:21, 15 August 2012 (UTC) @Gbawden: - the template may be used for both, as well as in ship-related lists. Mjroots (talk) 09:06, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Request to update Egyptian Naval Ensign[edit]

Can you please update the Egyptian Navy Template to this file instead of the unofficial one?

--Zo3a (talk) 03:22, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That is not the ensign, it is a ceremonial flag. Fry1989 eh? 18:48, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Query - Size in px of flagicon?[edit]

G'day, what is the size in px of the flagicon this template generates? Thanks, Peacemaker67 (crack... thump) 02:36, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've guessed it is 22px, but if it is something else, it'd be good know.
A query I have is whether this template could include a Example text parameter, like convert templates do? When used in non-sortable tables, having each instance linked is redundant. Unless someone knows another work-around? Cheers, Peacemaker67 (crack... thump) 09:42, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Edit requests[edit]

  • Add the flag of Brazilian Navy.
  • Replace Brazilian Navy to Brazilian Marine Corps, if it has "marines". 200.171.226.20 (talk) 11:49, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This template uses {{Country data Brazil}} which already has navy & marines. Where are you trying to use it? This request appears to be your only contribution so I can't help with the information available to me. Cabayi (talk) 12:09, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

English Navy need new and correct flagicons[edit]

Hello this flagicon listed for  Royal Navy is only for the period from 1620 and for the Navy Royal not the Royal Navy established in that name in (1660) and it was only used for the White Squadron of the English Navy From 1485 until 1603 these were the ensigns in use (this was the main one) but also these other two naval ensigns were used — confirmed by this source and an explanation of the flags on Plate IX Numbers three, four and five here

From 1625 to 1707 the English Navy had three ensigns these White Squadron and Red Squadron and finally Blue Squadron again confirmed in William Gordon Perrin's book here numbers ten, eleven and twelve were later used by the Royal Navy from 1660. You can see the devlopment of Naval ensigns from 1707 until 1799 here History of British Naval Ensigns (Great Britain) Ideally we need flagicons making for these because they are used in military persons infoboxes for the periods in question and using the wrong ensign for any officer prior to 1620 and I don't know how you make them that need correctly adding to Template:Country data England.--Navops47 (talk) 10:04, 19 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Names of navies[edit]

I'm new to the template thing. How come all the navies are no longer named correctly. For example the Royal Canadian Navy is now called Canada Navy and the Italian Royal Navy (Regia Marina) or the Italian Navy (Marina Militare) are both called Italy Navy? Thanks to those who answer. I am completely befuddled. Llammakey (talk) 13:50, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This is being discussed at WT:SHIPS. Let's stick to one venue. Mjroots (talk) 18:34, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Actually it is being discussed on WP:MILHIST too, so how about we cut with the snark. Llammakey (talk) 18:47, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please see the centralized discussion at WT:WikiProject Flag Template#Template:Navy doesn't display navy flag as the documentation says it's supposed to to find out why these had to be broken and how they were easily fixed. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 21:32, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Royal Navy[edit]

Pages that use  Royal Navy display the correct naval ensign but then display “United Kingdom Navy”, which doesn’t exist. It should display “Royal Navy”. 148.252.128.138 (talk) 00:44, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Royal Canadian Navy Ensign[edit]

It appears that File:Naval ensign of Canada; Naval jack of Canada (1968–2013).svg does not exist; can someone please fix it? Thank you. — Eric0892 (talk) 00:54, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
