Untitled discussion

I think that the relatives section should be scrapped, as accounts of who is related to whom vary greatly. The same applies for "powers". The rest is good. --Grammatical error 15:07, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

I removed relatives. Are you sure we should remove powers?--Dangerous-Boy 18:30, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
Well, what specific "power limitations" do we really know? A few people (such as me) believe that all gods are manifestations of the supreme and therefore omnipotent (although the vast majority do not), which would make the "powers" column pointless. Also, a Shaivite might consider Shiva to be omnipotent, whereas a Vaishnavite would consider him the greatest devotee of Vishnu. --Grammatical error 19:18, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

One more thing: what's the point of having Pali? It's not really relevant when talking about Hindu deities. I'd rather have something that is likely to be more useful in this context, like Malayalam for Ayyappan.--Grammatical error 20:41, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

I put Pali in there just incase since many of the buddhist deities are taken from Hindu ones and incase Buddhist sections are in there as well. I guess we could add Malayalam Isn't there a base script for the southern languages? How many more script table do you think we need?--Dangerous-Boy 20:50, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
Good point about Pali. I think local scripts should be used for deities who are mostly worshipped by a particular group of people and not a part of mainstream Hinduism - the best solution would be to just add more script options to the templates as you come across more local deities. The only ones I can think of at the moment are Ayyappan (Malayalam primarily, although vast numbers of Tamils amongst others worship him so Kannada and Telugu scripts should ideally be included as well), Andavan (Tamil, but that's in already) and apparently they worship a daughter of Shiva and Parvati in the North-West of India somewhere. Local village deities are everywhere, but most of them aren't notable enough to be mentioned in an encyclopaedia (apart from some list of minor deities or something). --Grammatical error 20:59, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
hm. I think it might be possible to a table in for local script and the editor input the name of the local script and input the diety's name in that script. Just one problem...I don't know how to do such a thing in wiki template code. I can only add a table. Might have to ask User:Squilibob about that but he's already done so much work for this template. Kind of feel bad asking him for more and User:Ganeshk seems too busy. Can you do it?--Dangerous-Boy 21:26, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
Changed it. Is that what you wanted? --Squilibob 08:06, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Pixels

Can someone decrease the default size of image in the template? Its too large now. Victor 01:47, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

The Transparent infobox

IMO the infobox must be made opaque again as it does not look good in articles with short Contents boxes e.g. Khandoba.--Redtigerxyz 11:22, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Just fixed. Gouranga(UK) (talk) 10:40, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Indic Text

Does anyone else think that the Indic text box should be moved underneath the Info-box in the template, or alternatively removed all-together? It's easy enough to add the Indic text box into an article on it's own, seperately from the box, and looks better in some instances. Regards, Gouranga(UK) 08:16, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

I think the Indic Text box must be included as most Hindu deities articles have the diety names in Devanagari. Aslo; we have a provision in the infobox for the Devanagari name.--Redtigerxyz 11:09, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
In which articles did it cause problems in layout????--Redtigerxyz (talk) 05:14, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
The Indic text box looks untidy as it is positioned above the info box, and appears on the page at a different position to the rest of the box. Is there a way to include it below, without it looking so out of place? Regards, Gouranga(UK) (talk) 10:37, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
I tried putting the Indic Text box below but it didn't look good. I think it looked better above the infobox.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 12:30, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
In which case I'd rather we left it out altogether and added the indic box in seperately where deemed appropriate. Gouranga(UK) (talk) 12:40, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
I still think the Indic Text box should be included.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 13:26, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Planet

Planet is not really a Graha. Also, a deity's associated with one or more grahas may not be known, the field is only filled in Navagraha articles, nowhere else. So removing it.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 11:43, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Siblings

Removed Siblings as all deities do not have siblings. Siblings, hardly play an important role in Hindu mythology in association with a particular deity, like Consorts - who are notable in the infobox.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 11:41, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Should it be possible to Wiki-format the template in such a way that siblings is only optional. I think it is important sometimes but not always so it should always be an option. Examples include Ganesha and Kartikeya, Rama and Bharata, and the Pandav brothers. GizzaDiscuss © 08:07, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
If siblings are important, why not parents or children? It will never end. So i suggest limiting it to Consort only.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 10:24, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Language Transliterations

Fields like Pali_Transliteration is not used in any of articles, i have seen til now. IMO, it shouldf be removed.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 14:51, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

orange same color as message bar

Hey, I know it cool and tuff and neato and all, but can we shelve the orange color? For one thing, it's glaring.. gives me a bit of a headache. For another, it's the same color as the "You have messages" bar.. may cause heart palpitations among Wikipedians. Ling.Nut (talkWP:3IAR) 01:39, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

The changed colour has no association with Hinduism. The #FFC569 orange is related to Hinduism. --Redtigerxyz (talk) 13:34, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Wouldn't it be useful to have the patronage of the god in the box? IE, Vishnu is the god of maintenance? I need feedback on this. Emeline (talk) 00:53, 2 June 2009 (UTC)!

Symbols/iconography

I added a "symbols" parameter for other miscellaneous Hindu iconography#Symbols associated with individual devas that aren't weapons or mounts, so hopefully it doesn't break the template. —Eekerz (t) 14:23, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Is there a way to copy this template over into Wikiversity? Or to transclude it?

I am setting up a Classical Mythology course in Wikiversity and want to use the deity Template there. Is there an easy way to port it over besides just copying it into a template in Wikiversity? I would like to have all the links automatically forward to Wikipedia. Thanks!--Kenmayer (talk) 17:25, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

looks like you figured it out. Frietjes (talk) 23:22, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

Spelling

Up until a moment ago the template was allowing "color" or "colour" and "artifact" or "artefact" but only "center" not "centre". This has been fixed but there may be transclusions using inconsistent combinations of "colour" and/or "artefact" with "center". It's actually pretty simple to retrospectively fix this by defaulting to the US spelling, "center", but using "centre" if either "colour" or "artefact" has been used. For consistency, though, it might as well be this way for each of these, that is, default to US spelling but use Commonwealth spelling consistently if used at all. Explanation for Fields?

Could someone who has an understanding of this template add an explanation to all the fields, instead of just listing them as the page currently does? Mtemple12 (talk) 17:56, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

I need explanations just like you. I'm translating this infobox to Japanese now, but some fields don't make sense to me. For example, "world" seems to be prepared for Norse deities, but maybe this field is not used in English Wikipedia, so I can't imagine what it means. Does this field mean "nine homeworlds"?--雲霞 (talk) 11:37, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Any thoughts on how to do this merge? The TfD suggested some of the fields at {{Infobox Jain deity}} shouldn't be carried over, especially any that aren't infobox material (i.e. details not important to a general audience). Placing a notification at WP:WikiProject Jainism and WP:WikiProject Religion. ~ RobTalk 07:30, 25 March 2016 (UTC)

I think the following parameters must be present:-
  • Ganadhara or chief disciple
  • Predecessor
  • Successor
  • Main Teachings
Apart from this, Tree, Height & Age should also be there. -Nimit (talk) 16:42, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
Don't you think main teachings can be handled way better in the article body and/or the lead? Stuffing that into an infobox sounds messy and sub-optimal in terms of getting the info across. ~ RobTalk 17:44, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
@BU Rob13: Okay, we can leave that one. -Nimit (talk) 17:54, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
Alright, sounds good. All the others should either be able to fit into existing parameters or easy enough to add. They're all reasonable infobox material. ~ RobTalk 18:07, 25 March 2016 (UTC)

Preview warning

Resolved

There appears to be a glitch in the preview warning. I edited Eirene (goddess) and, in preview, received a warning that the |Roman_equivalent= parameter is an "unknown parameter". That parameter is, of course, a known parameter in this template and is working correctly in that article. Could this be something squirrelly in the Lua module?  Paine Ellsworth  put'r there  05:13, 21 April 2017 (UTC)

I have just added the tracker and could not add all params. Still working on that. If, its not a problem for you, please add the required params in tracker. -- Pankaj Jain Capankajsmilyo (talk · contribs · count) 05:57, 21 April 2017 (UTC)
To editor Capankajsmilyo: please explain.  Paine Ellsworth  put'r there  06:02, 21 April 2017 (UTC)
If you edit the template, you will see #invoke at the end and then different params separated with "|". The params added into that invoke won't be displayed. Rest all (if used) will be displayed just as |Roman_equivalent=. The relevant params just need to be added there. -- Pankaj Jain Capankajsmilyo (talk · contribs · count) 06:04, 21 April 2017 (UTC)
Also I would suggest replacing Roman_equivalent with roman_equivalent. -- Pankaj Jain Capankajsmilyo (talk · contribs · count) 06:05, 21 April 2017 (UTC)

RFC for headers

This template has no subdivisions or headers and will become too long if used fully. I would like to invite comments for the possible headers and subdivisions. For example, Symbols encompassing symbol, color, tree, etc. and Personal information covering mother, father, birth, age, etc. I would further suggest to move Predecessor and Successor to the top below image. -- Pankaj Jain Capankajsmilyo (talk · contribs · count) 05:40, 23 April 2017 (UTC)

Get rid of Caps

 Done

Frietjes Can you please run a script to change all "first letter caps" params used to "first letter small" params? -- Pankaj Jain Capankajsmilyo (talk · contribs · count) 05:58, 21 April 2017 (UTC)

Capankajsmilyo, I (1) used this script to regenerate the unknown parameters check, (2) added lowercase equivalents for many of the parameters, and (3) added tracking for the uppercase versions in Category:Pages using infobox deity with deprecated parameters. note that I didn't track some things which are always uppercase, like "Roman" and "Christian", but I did enable lowercase if someone wants to use it for those. as far as changing them all, I will see if I have time this weekend, otherwise we can make a bot request. Frietjes (talk) 13:41, 21 April 2017 (UTC)
@Frietjes Thanks for the cleanup. How to proceed further? Would you please help with the bot request? -- Pankaj Jain Capankajsmilyo (talk · contribs · count) 18:45, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
Capankajsmilyo, we probably don't need a bot for under 150 uses, but feel free to ask for one if you want. Frietjes (talk) 14:47, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
Im ok with anything which fixes this. I have recently come across AWB. Would that help in speeding the things? -- Pankaj Jain Capankajsmilyo (talk · contribs · count) 17:40, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
Capankajsmilyo, AWB would work, but you would need to have experience writing the regular expressions for text replacement. they can be complicated if you want to be careful to not accidentally transform something other than the parameter names. we are now under 85 uses, so I imagine the tracking category will be empty soon. Frietjes (talk) 18:22, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
In that case, I'm willing to avoid using AWB by myself. Since, you are on it, I am sure it will be clear pretty soon. Thanks again. -- Pankaj Jain Capankajsmilyo (talk · contribs · count) 18:29, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

More pantheons for equivalent data

Is it possible to add further pantheon/culture equivalency lines to the infobox. It would be nice to add Inanna as the Sumarian equivalent in the Ishtar infobox (and vice versa) and Ishtar as the Babylonian equivalent of Astarte (who needs an infobox). Astarte is already listed in Ishtar's infobox as the Canaanite equivalent. --Acjelen (talk) 17:44, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

| equivalent1 =
| equivalent2_type =

No Indic scripts

@Frietjes: Is it possible to remove the three scripts (there are zillion scripts in India, putting a few but not a dozens more scripts is a POV issue; these fields are a major source of OR + vandalism)! See this discussion as well. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 23:41, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

Ms Sarah Welch, of course we can remove them. we do have a generic |script_name= / |script= as well as |other_names= to hold any important transliterations/translations. I suggest we wait a couple days to see if there are any objections before removing them. but, I definitely support the removal. Frietjes (talk) 00:23, 21 April 2017 (UTC)
Ms Sarah Welch, and to be 100 percent clear, could you provide a list of parameters which you proposing to have removed? i.e., |Kannada_script=, |Tamil_script=, and |Devanagari=? or which ones? Frietjes (talk) 00:27, 21 April 2017 (UTC)
Yes, all three! and may be more. Are there any other hidden fields for scripts in the code? Let us wait indeed. May be we should wait for that RfC on WP:INDIA to close out. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 00:31, 21 April 2017 (UTC)

Add "prophet" ?

Please elaborate on the reason and cases where such Param is intended to be used. -- Pankaj Jain Capankajsmilyo (talk · contribs · count) 04:14, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
Many (most?) new religions are associated with one person or a small group of leaders. It would be good to note that association in the infobox. LK (talk) 05:28, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
Perhaps "cult leader" is too charged a term. Perhaps just "leader" or "religious leader" would be more neutral? LK (talk) 05:31, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
  • Oppose. This is a deity template, not (new) religion. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 13:49, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
Why should deities of new(ish) religions be restricted? The documentation states "can be used for any god, deity or mythological figure who is worshiped in a religion or cult". Doesn't say anything about age. LK (talk) 23:48, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
Doesn't matter, new or old religion. This is a deity template. We already have Template:Infobox religious biography and religions related templates. You may want to make suggestions there. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 01:37, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Mantra etc

@Frietjes: Thanks for reverting my bold change. The mantra and abode field attracts a lot of vandalism, unsourced content, disruptive edit warring. A lack of underlying source, the nature and the diversity of their texts makes it unlikely that the situation will improve. The mantra field is the biggest problem, I don't understand why we even have it. The abode field too is problematic in almost all cases. The exception may be Kailasa or Meru for Shiva, and Vaikuntha for Vishnu. But there are problems there too, if you see the Indian texts. I wonder if you know a past discussion which reached a reasoned consensus for having these two fields. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 18:10, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

a person's birthday and age attracts a lot of vandalism, unsourced content, etc. but we keep it because it can be used properly. hence, we don't remove fields just because they are abused. we remove them if they are (a) not important or (b) can never/rarely be used properly. it sounds like you are arguing that they should be removed for one or both of these reasons, which is fine, but the vandalism angle is not a valid reason. back in the day, we had about a dozen different deity infoboxes. these were merged into one infobox, and the documentation had specific examples reflecting the different uses. yes, the mantra is an example that is specific for Hindu deities, but the abode was actually added for Etruscan, Greek, Mesopotamian, Canaanite, Roman, etc. deities. hence, we should really think of all types before removing for one. Frietjes (talk) 18:49, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
Indeed. I missed the merged situation. The abode field is useful and needed elsewhere. You are right, we must leave it alone. That leaves the mantra field to discuss. Unless someone can explain with WP:RS, why even have it, I suggest we delete it because it is not important and can never/rarely be used properly. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 19:04, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

The "type" field...

... does not appear to be working properly. At least when used in the Yúcahu article. Is this field case sensitive or are the accents causing issues? El Alternativo (talk) 02:06, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

El Alternativo, the |type= is used to (1) change the colouring of the headers if there is a predefined colour for that particular type, and (2) change some of the label links used for some of the data entries. currently, there is no place where the type explicitly appears. Frietjes (talk) 14:10, 17 December 2017 (UTC)
I see. Thanks for the reply. El Alternativo (talk) 16:34, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

More on "mantra"

On Haitian Loa and similar articles where this is being used for non-Hindu deities, the "mantra" field is being used for songs and rhythms. But when you hover over "mantra" it of course shows the Hindu article (as it should). This will muddy things in a number of ways for those unfamiliar with these topics.

Can we have a more neutral version, or alternate version of this template, that has "song" and "rhythm" as options? And that has some way of putting in songs and rhythms? Even Hindu deities who have mantras also have songs. I'm not experienced with editing templates, but am willing to try as this is needed. - CorbieV 22:17, 21 April 2019 (UTC)

More equivalents?

There are missing a lot of popular equivalents like: germanic, nordic(sometimes some figures are confirmed for nordic peoples only), celtic, baltic. Could also add finnic, hungarian and armenian. It is impossible to compare europan gods in roman/greek/slavic/baltic/celtic/germanic at once now. Sławobóg (talk) 13:37, 18 October 2019 (UTC)

Slavic color

Slavic infobox should use red color (I propose #ce1720). Red color is imporant in slavic culture: rushnyk, slavic priests used white and red clothes, look https://rodnovery.ru/, folk costumes used a lot of red color, there was red paint on Zbruch Idol, etc. Sławobóg (talk) 13:43, 18 October 2019 (UTC)

Wikidata

Some editor had vandalized the template so that it would continue to display images (chosen by AI) from an outside site (Wikidata), even if no images were provided as template parameter. Parameter Is Not "hiro"

Hey, I am a Japanese Wikipedian who writes about Egyptology mainly in jawp. The name of the parameter "hiro" is OBVIOUSLY incorrect, since 2013. The exact name is "hiero", of course.

The man who didn't know so much about Egyptology imported this template into Jawp and continued mistaking it. I strongly request you guys to fix this problem. However, please notice that the parameter is being used as "hiro", thus changing it into "hiero" will make an error.

I have to fix THIS problem in Jawp, so I don't want to care about Enwp.--Sethemhat (talk) 09:38, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

@Jonesey95: Thank you for your speedy responce. However, I strongly think that we should change EVERY article of Ancient Egypt that has "hiro". This is why I don't want to deal with this problem.
Keeping the mistaken parameter leads misunderstanding. I do not request YOU to do this work. Wikipedian who edits Egyptology article (and had used mistaken parameter continually) should do.--Sethemhat (talk) 14:25, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
This is a volunteer-driven project. It appears that there are only about 60 articles using |hiro=, so if you feel strongly, please fix them. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:29, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
Yes. This is a volunteer project. Thus, I have to fix THIS PROBLEM in Japanese Wikipedia. I have a lot of things to do in my homewiki, so I have no time to care enwp.
My suggestion in enwp is just mercy. I have no responsibility for fixing enwp problem, but I thought I should say if someone could fix it.
I don't say YOU, Mr.Jonesey95, should. Some enwp user should. No one will do? That's how it goes.--Sethemhat (talk) 13:07, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
