Robert John Sholl[edit]

RJ Sholl, c. 1880

Created/expanded by Grant65 (talk). Self nom at 07:23, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

  • article was created on 16 September 2012 and was nominated on the 25 September, therefore, it is too old for DYK. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 19:03, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
  • This is quite an impressive new article, only a few days late, and nominated by someone who hasn't participated in DYK in a few years. We might wish to consider allowing a few days leeway beyond the usual five day requirement, as has been allowed elsewhere in the current crop of nominees. This is not good to go. But I agree that the article is impressive. I'm putting a notice on the author's talk page. A quick browse through the article:
  • Article created by Grant65 on September 16, 2012 with 14,922 characters of readable prose
  • Hook is good length at 182 characters
  • Not all paragraphs are sourced
  • Much sourcing is offline, so it would be AGF on a new editor. Just mentioning it.
  • There needs to be someone familiar with copyright to have a look at the image. It does not seem to be on Commons, but came from User:Multichill/Free uploads/2012-09-21, whatever that means. The source is listed as Unknown.

  • NOTE: MY ANTI-VIRUS BLOCKED THE ABOVE-MENTIONED MULTICHILL AS A RISKY CONNECTION.Maile66 (talk) 00:30, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Re the anti-virus blocking, other users have checked this and were not blocked. It's possibly just my anti-virus.Maile66 (talk) 11:20, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Many thanks for waiving the time limit. I will address these issues ASAP. (BTW I uploaded the image. User:Multichill has a page of miscellaneous, recently uploaded images.) Copyright will not be an issue, due to the fact that the subject died in 1886 and copyright is long extinguished under Australian law. That is why the source is "unknown", although I do know hard copy/prints of it can be bought for $ from the State Library of Western Australia (catalogue number 322B; Vol. 40) and it has been scanned from such a print by a third party. Grant Talk 04:49, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

The source is where the image was obtained from (website, scan of photocopy, scan of personally held original, etc.) and the author is who originally made the photograph. The source information should always be filled out (image came from somewhere) but the author can be unknown. For the source, just put down that the image is a scan from the Volume 40 available in the library. Froggerlaura ribbit 15:50, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
  • I did some editing on this article and gave an online source for the first paragraph under Early Life
  • I moved all family paragraphs into the first section
  • I think this article could use more sub-sectioning, particularly in the "Career as Magistrate" section. That's a lot of information. Seems to be an entire chunk of Western Australia history and Sholl's place therein. Maybe if this could be sub-sectioned, within that section, by subject area. I've been doing a little more editing - moving the wife up to family, punctuation, referencing. I'm happy to do that. However, I think my editing means that someone else needs to do the review. Maile66 (talk) 22:10, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Maile and everyone else for your efforts and suggestions; I'm overwhelmed! I have been too busy this weekend to look at the article, but will work on it when I can. Grant | Talk 01:38, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

I think the issues raised above have now been addressed. Thanks again for your advice and patience. Grant | Talk 05:59, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

  • A new reviewer is needed to see whether the issues identified by Maile66 have been solved (Maile66, having done a number of edits intended to solves this issues, has a conflict of interest against doing that review). BlueMoonset (talk) 18:09, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
Very impressive! Hook and inline citation are fine. Please note, that the Robert Sholl's obituary in The West Australian on Tuesday 22 June 1886 is published on page 3, not on page 2 (the 5th column from the left, half way from the top).[1] Everything checks out. The GDFL image needs to be moved to Commons. Otherwise, good to go. Poeticbent talk 21:39, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
