Pyramid of Neferirkare[edit]

Neferirkare's pyramid was about as tall as Menkaure's pyramid at Giza.
Neferirkare's pyramid was about as tall as Menkaure's pyramid at Giza.
  • ... that despite extensive posthumous works which were never completed, the Pyramid of Neferirkare still towers over the Abusir necropolis? Source: Despite the incomplete nature of the structure, the pyramid –which is of comparable size to Menkaure's pyramid at Giza– dominates over its surrounds as a result of the position of its site standing on a hill some 33 m (108 ft) above the Nile delta. from Altenmüller 2001, p. 598; Verner & Zemina 1994, p. 77; and Verner 2002 p. 50 and Upon taking the throne, Nyuserre undertook the task of completing the three unfinished monuments of his predecessors and closest family members: his father, Neferirkare; his mother, Khentkaus II; and his brother, Neferefre. from Verner and Zemina 1994 p. 80. And less significantly The temple itself remained incomplete at Neferirkare's death, and archaeological evidence suggests it was completed later by Neferefre and Nyuserre. from Verner and Zemina p.77–78. (Note: the temple is part of the mortuary, or pyramid, complex which encompasses everything including the main pyramid and if you read the article you'll note that no cult pyramid was ever built and that the valley temple and causeway were diverted from Neferirkare's pyramid complex to Nysuerre's) and and the largest main pyramid at the site. from Verner 2001d p. 291
    • ALT1:... that despite incomplete posthumous construction work, the Pyramid of Neferirkare still towers over the Abusir necropolis? Same as above, just rephrased. I prefer the first hook to be honest.
    • ALT2:... that the Fifth Dynasty Pyramid of Neferirkare was originally conceived as a step pyramid, a design which had been deprecated at the end of the Third Dynasty more than a century prior? Source: The construction was originally planned in the form of a step pyramid, an unusual design choice for a Fifth Dynasty king considering that the era of step pyramid's had ended with the Third Dynasty (26th or 27th Century BC) one or two centuries prior, depending on the scholar and source. from Altenmüller 2001, p. 598; Verner & Zemina 1994, p. 77; Verner 2002, p. 52; Kahl 2001, p. 591.
  • Comment: I was asked about an image on my last nomination, however, that pyramid is currently just a mound of rubble. Neferirkare's pyramid is in ruins, however, the distinct step pyramid structure (which is another unique feature of the pyramid as mentioned in ALT2) is clearly visible and intact plus it's also one of the taller pyramids constructed (certainly the tallest of the Fifth Dynasty). Please ignore the image file name, it's incorrect. Pyramid of Neferefre should suffice to explain why. An alternate image is the one currently in the infobox, but, I think this image looks better and gives a more complete picture. I'll let the reviewer decide though as I've never submitted a picture for DYK. I'd be very tempted to actually have the caption as: Did you know that Neferirkare's pyramid was about as tall as Menkaure's pyramid at Giza? Source: refer to ALT1 although it was actually about 8 m taller than Menakure's pyramid originally. Alternative captions: The step pyramid is distinctly visible underneath the ruined/rubble exterior or Neferirkare's pyramid with step pyramid clearly visible underneath the rubble exterior.

review

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
Image: Image is freely licensed, used in the article, and clear at 100px.
QPQ: None required.

Overall: The first two hooks don't work for me – their point seems to be a non sequitur. ALT2 is quite verbose but is inside the limit and the issue of the step design goes nicely with the picture so that's the hook I'm passing. There's no QPQ but the nominator only seems to have done two DYKs, so that requirement is waived. Andrew D. (talk) 20:17, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

  • I'm all good with ALT2 if you think that one is best. The first two hooks might have been better if I'd managed to integrate the fact that the pyramid was the tallest at the site, though that would have put me well over the character limit. This one is my fourth, rather than third, DYK nomination. My other nom has been approved but not yet posted to the main page. So I only have 2 credits at the moment. QPQ will be required after my next DYK nom. I haven't done a DYK review before, so I'm making use of the no QPQ required. Thanks for the review Andrew D..
