James S. Rains

  • ... that according to one historian, James S. Rains made a "significant contribution to the Confederate war effort" by getting drunk? Source: Shea 2009, p. 53

    • Comment: Possibly a bit on the negative side for a biographical hook, but the subject has been dead for over 140 years and is primarily known for incompetence and drinking on the job, so I think it's okay here.

Improved to Good Article status by Hog Farm (talk). Self-nominated at 04:15, 19 October 2022 (UTC).

  • Hi Hog Farm, review follows: article promoted to GA 18 October; article is well written and cited inline throughout to reliable sources; the vast majority of sources are offline, I don't have access to them but more than happy to assume in good faith that there is no overly close paraphrasing from them by this experienced and trustworthy editor; hook is interesting (I had assumed it was a Union officer initially, but I think that's part of its appeal that it keeps the reader guessing); hook is mentioned in article and cited inline (to an offline source); I don't think there is any problem with negativity given the time that has passed; a QPQ has been carried out.
