HMS Formidable (67)[edit]

Formidable underway, 3 August 1942

5x expanded by Sturmvogel 66 (talk). Self nominated at 19:24, 28 March 2014 (UTC).

  • Can't we have something about "the ship that launched herself"? That's a bit more interesting to the general reader. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:26, 30 March 2014 (UTC)
  • ALT1: ... that the British aircraft carrier HMS Formidable (pictured) was nicknamed as "The Ship That Launched Herself" when the wooden cradle supporting her collapsed just before the launching ceremony was to begin on 17 August 1939 and the ship slid down the slipway all by herself? Here's my first stab although it's a bit long. I suppose the date could be trimmed to shorten it, but I'm open to suggestions/tweaks as there's not much fat that can be trimmed, IMO. --Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 18:47, 30 March 2014 (UTC)
  • Why not just cut the hook off after "The Ship That Launched Herself"? That leaves the reader curious as to why it was nicknamed that. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:34, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
  • That seems much more like a simple, and annoying teaser, than a complete statement.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 01:07, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
  • It's called a "hook" for a reason. If you want to go with your first, alright. I won't press the matter. But you'll certainly have more impact on the MP with a more hooky hook. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:15, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
  • True, but the DYKs include an explanation for the hook, do they not?--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 03:04, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
  • In the article, generally. How do you feel about ALT2, before I review? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 16:35, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
  • This seems to be a reasonable compromise.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 19:59, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Hooks are short enough and interesting enough (ALT2 preferred, as the more interesting). Article is certainly long enough, new enough. Image is free (expired Crown Copyright). Referencing is thorough, no close paraphrasing or copyvio found with online sources. Good to go! — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:24, 3 April 2014 (UTC)
