Green Man, Ashbourne

Green Man inn sign in 2007
Green Man inn sign in 2007
  • ... that the Green Man & Black's Head Royal Hotel has the world's longest inn sign (pictured)? Source: "Overhead can be seen the famous sign of The Green Man and Black's Head, noted in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest inn sign in the world." ([1]) "The Green Man And Black Heads Royal Hotel is not easy to miss, the landmark with its historic Cross Street Gallows and is featured proudly in the Guinness book of records for having the longest inn sign in the world" ([2])

  • Nominated one day after creation, so new enough. Prose if 1.6k slightly exceeds the 1.5k requirement, so long enough. Prose is written in a neutral manner. Every sentence of every paragraph of every section is referenced to a reliable source for the context. Earwig found no copyvio, and I see no close paraphrasing, organizational similarity, or any other copyright issues. Hook is within format parameters, and is interesting to a broad audience. The hook's claims are directly found in the article, and they are directly attributable to the source immediately cited after the claim. QPQ complete. Image is properly licenced, is used within the article, and displays well at small size (although the sign itself gets a little lost.) This small but interesting article is ready for and deserving of main page exposure. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 15:05, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote this, and found another ref from Historic England that refers to it as a gallows-type sign. I'm wondering if we could add that to the hook. Honestly, the sign does not show up well in the thumbnail image so I was planning to promote it without that. The "gallows" wording will certainly spice it up. Let me know. Yoninah (talk) 21:04, 9 November 2019 (UTC)
Well, I for one like your suggestion. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 03:36, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
Yes, sounds fine to me. I remember reading about the gallows, I was just a bit concerned about its, well, gallows humour, but if you've found another source, that might not be such an issue. I haven't got back here because I haven't been able to think of an ALT for it. Time to ping @EEng:. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 23:04, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

You do know it's possible to wear out the batteries, right? This is a tough one. How about

ALT1 ... that there's a man in tweeds on a gallows outside the Green Man, Ashbourne?

EEng 23:37, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

Yes, this checks out, if you combine paragraphs/sources. It's hooky (it's from EEng, how could it be otherwise?) I approved ALT1 also. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 15:07, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
  • Thank you for your kind and undeserved praise. It's nice to know an old hooker like myself can still be useful. I don't mean to prolong this, but on looking again we might consider:
ALT2 ... that there's a Green Man on a gallows in Ashbourne, Derbyshire?
I mean, the man is not himself literally green, but his tweeds are green, so it's a thought. (I'm not a fan of linking things which distract from the bolded link and which the reader will easily find linked in the article; thus no link on Ashbourne, Derbyshire.) EEng 15:48, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
  • ALT2a: ... that a Green Man in tweeds poses on a gallows in Ashbourne, Derbyshire? Yoninah (talk) 18:45, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
The problem with A2a is that poses removes the (intentionally misleading) implication that he's being executed, which is the point of A2. EEng 20:03, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
  • Oh. Right. Sorry, I don't think along these lines in general. ALT2 looks good; can we have an approval tick, @78.26:? Yoninah (talk) 20:46, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
  • ALT1 also works for me; maybe the people at ERRORS would even like that better. Yoninah (talk) 20:47, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
Yup. ALT2 approved also, but I prefer ALT1, I think it is more hooky and (strictly speaking) more accurate, both. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 20:50, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
