Gordon W. McKay[edit]

Source: A Bend Bulletin article dated 29 July 1950 says: "In February 1943, he (McKay) went into the navy and served in the Pacific with the Seabees as chief warrant officer until February 1946. He received training in amphibious landings."

  • All criteria seem to be met: new enough and long enough, well-referenced and neutral article, no evidence of copyvios or plagiarism, hook is short enough, is in the article, and is cited. Since the hook is verifiable in the source AFAICT (though I can't read it very well since I don't have a subscription), I think this is ready for promotion. • @Orygun: The current hook isn't very interesting. I'd recommend replacing it with something else; perhaps mention that he was Bend's Senior Citizen of the Year? I mean, I didn't even know that there were senior citizens of the year! RileyBugz私に叫ぼう私の編集 00:35, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
  • Here is the alternate DYK hook you suggested, but I like the original hook better.
ALT1 … that in 1960, Gordon W. McKay was honored as Bend, Oregon's Senior Citizen of the Year?
Source: A Bend Bulletin article dated 4 March 1964 says: "He (McKay) was selected as Bend’s senior citizen of the year in 1960..."
Here is alternate based on the original hook that mentions his engagement in the Battle of Tawara. I think this is more interesting than the original version or the senior citizen of the year hook.
ALT2 … that during World War II, Gordon W. McKay was a Warrant Officer in the Seabees who participated in the Battle of Tarawa?
Source: Headline in an article published in the Bend Bulletin] on 14 December 1943 says: "Bend Seabee on Tarawa Island … Gordon McKay describes horror of atoll where Marines fought bloodiest battle in history" The article describe McKay’s experience in the battle of Tarawa. Text includes: "McKay, a warrant officer in the Seabees, …"
Bottomline … I am fine with any of these three hooks, but I think ALT2 is the best.--Orygun (talk) 00:04, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
I very strongly prefer ALT1, as the two other hooks are essentially saying "this guy did this thing in the military", which frankly isn't all that interesting. The reason I like ALT1 is because it is interesting; who knew that there was a Bend senior citizen of the year? Also, I've edited ALT1 a bit for grammar/style stuff.
