Don't Mention the World Cup[edit]

Created by The C of E (talk). Self nominated at 08:54, 29 May 2014 (UTC).

  • The source cited for Cleese re-recording the line from "The Germans" doesn't state that. I also think you have the quote slightly wrong, but since there is no source cited for that I don't know where you got it from. Perhaps there is an official Fawlty Towers scripts site where you can check it...the internet is full of wonderful things. Belle (talk) 15:40, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
  • Yes, but not that he re-recorded the line. Meanwhile, IMDB (that ever reliable font of knowledge) says the quote is "Listen, don't mention the war. I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it all right." [1] Belle (talk) 16:00, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
  • Was there a war in Germany in 2006? (By which I mean that the hook could easily be misread to say that there was.) Dwpaul Talk 17:10, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
  • New enough, but not long enough. I removed a bit of repetition in the prose, and now it's at 1496 characters. The rewrite of the hook is inaccurate; it should say "from mentioning the Second World War in Germany". Alternately, you could write:
  • ALT1: ... that Basil Fawlty sang "Don't Mention the War" to try and change English feelings towards Germans during the 2006 FIFA World Cup? Yoninah (talk) 22:13, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
  • OK. And thanks for upping the character count. Article is new enough, long enough, well referenced, no close paraphrasing seen. Hook ref verified and cited inline. I added some links to the hook. QPQ done. Good to go. Yoninah (talk) 22:50, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
  • Not to muck thing up, but two World Wars took place in Germany, and I think Cleese was referring to both of them. ;-) Dwpaul Talk 23:33, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
  • I didn't see that in the sources. The emphasis was on the Nazi symbols, salutes, and goose-stepping soldiers. Yoninah (talk) 00:02, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
