Coccothrinax jimenezii[edit]

  • ... that Coccothrinax jimenezii, a palm tree native to the island of Hispaniola, was listed as a critically endangered species within two years of its formal description? Source: " In addition, Mejía and García (2013)did not provide an IUCN-based conservation assessment for this species because information for this species in Haiti was lacking. Based on our field studies the species should receive the Critically Endangered (CR) conservation status." ([1] p.152-153)
    • ALT1:... that Coccothrinax jimenezii, a critically endangered palm tree, is threatened by the rising lake level of Lago Enriquillo, a hypersaline lake in the Dominican Republic? Source: "In the last ten years Lago Enriquillo hasexperienced an unexpected rise in water level. This has resulted in flooding that has had negative effects in farmland and roads (RomeroLuna 2011). It is unclear what environmental variables are behind the water dynamics of this lake, although Romero Luna (2011) suggested that atypical rain fluctuations could account for changes in the lake water levels. Because the only known Dominican Republic site of C. jimenezii is located near the shore of this lake, we believe that changes in the hydrology represent a potential threat for the conservation of this species" ([2] p. 151)

Sad interesting facts, on good sources, offline sources accepted AGF, no copyvio obvious. - Is there any common name, or translation of the scientific one (which looks like a name)? Could you make clearer about the difference of distribution of Coccothrinax jimenezii and Coccothrinax general? I am open to adding a year (2013 or 2015) to the hook, to make it more urgent, - it could be in some distant past without it. I'll watch. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:07, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
Thank you Gerda Arendt. Here are a couple other attempts
ALT2:...that Coccothrinax jimenezii, a critically endangered palm tree which was formally described in 2013, is known from only two small populations, one threatened by rising lake levels and the other threatened by overharvesting?
ALT3:...that the palm tree Coccothrinax jimenezii which was formally described in 2013 and declared critically endangered in 2015, is known from two small populations, both of which are threatened?
There's no common name for the species, even though it could be called something like "Jiménez's thatch palm" no one has used that name. Guettarda (talk) 13:05, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
approving those also, - prep builder can choose. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:39, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
