Template:Cite NBD1849/doc

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This template is wrapper around {{cite encyclopedia}} it can use all the parameters that {{cite encyclopedia}} can use, but as documented below some of them are filled in automatically and there are also some additional parameters. As can be seen below in the example section using this template saves the editor time (as many of the parameters are filled in automatically) and as those parameters are not displayed in edit mode it reduces clutter editors see when editing which is particularly useful if the full citation appears in an inline citation within a ref...tag pair.

Usage[edit]

Parameters that are filled in by this template:

first = William R.
last = O'Byrne
editor-link = William Richard O'Byrne
date = 1849
encyclopedia = A Naval Biographical Dictionary
location = London
publisher = John Murray

There are some none standard parameters:

wstitle = NBD article name as it appears on Wikisource — the template adds in the rest of the link automatically
display = name — overrides the display to the screen of wstitle or title. This is sometimes desirable for example for hiding disambiguation extensions which do not appear in the original print version of he encyclopedia
short = x (or any other value) — it hides the display of first, last, link, location, publisher this is typically used when this template appears in the External links section to remove clutter

Other considerations:

If wstitle is not set then the standard parameter title must be set if neither are then a red warning printed
Unless noicon is set an icon is displayed before first character displayed by the template. The icon displayed varies depending on whether wstitle is set.

Examples[edit]

Usually only two variable are required to access the article on Wikisource:

{{Cite NBD1849 |wstitle=Adam, Charles |page=3}}
O'Byrne, William R. (1849). "Adam, Charles" . A Naval Biographical Dictionary. London: John Murray. p. 3.

To change the title displayed:

{{Cite NBD1849 |wstitle=Adam, Charles |page=3 |display=ADAM, Charles}}
O'Byrne, William R. (1849). "ADAM, Charles" . A Naval Biographical Dictionary. London: John Murray. p. 3.

To shorten the display:

{{Cite NBD1849 |wstitle=Adam, Charles |page=3  |short=x}}
"Adam, Charles" . A Naval Biographical Dictionary. 1849. p. 3.

To remove the icon from the display:

{{Cite NBD1849 |wstitle=Adam, Charles |page=3 |short=x |noicon=x}}
"Adam, Charles". A Naval Biographical Dictionary. 1849. p. 3.

It may be that an article has yet to be ported to Wikisouce article space and a url is required (the url parameter is ignored if wstitle is set):

{{Cite NBD1849 |title=Adam, Charles |page=3 |url=https://archive.org/details/cu31924027921372/page/n16/mode/1up}}
Public Domain O'Byrne, William R. (1849). "Adam, Charles". A Naval Biographical Dictionary. London: John Murray. p. 3.
