Okay.

Show me a single thing to show that a fictional island or SSB stage is known enough. Googlehits show that a current game gets more results, but it DOESN'T show that people refer to YIDS as Yoshi's Island, only that the name contains "Yoshi's Island". There are three games with "Yoshi's Island" in the title (if you count the GBA remake as a separate game - debatable). Walk up to someone in the street and ask them whether they've played "Yoshi's Island" and they'll most likely respond with "Which version?". Just because you might never have heard people use the term for the DS version doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I do, for example, when it's clear from the context that I'm referring to the DS version; just like I use the term to refer to the SNES version when it's clear from the context that I'm referring to that version. I suspect I'm not the only person to do this (especially with the English language, but I digress) and that is my point. "Yoshi's Island" is ambiguous because it can refer to a number of different things depending on the context; hence the need for a dis-ambiguation page.
On a side note, can we not turn this into 2007's own Bowser disambig dispute, please. (Incidentally, there's similarities between that conflict and this one. You objected to the Bowser move because you personally hadn't used "Bowser" to refer to anything but the character) – Steel 23:11, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

HOW are these the same? You're focusing only on Google hits, which don't show people calling any game in the series besides the original "Yoshi's Island". Only the remake (which cannot be given preference over the original) and the original itself have gone by that moniker. Yoshi's Island is the shorthand version of the SNES game. Yoshi's Island is not YIDS' shorthand name. Disambiguation is necessary when there are multiple subjects that it may refer to and there cannot be a decision made. Under your logic, KKK wouldn't redirect here. Mario is well-known as a name, but the character gets the article. Similarly, a location that is unknown to anyone who has not played SMW or W2 is not nearly as notable as SMW2 itself. Yoshi's Island is the game's subtitle - Just like people call The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past simply "A Link to the Past", people call Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island simply "Yoshi's Island". And on top of that, no one would call Phantom Hourglass "The Legend of Zelda", unless they know only of that game in the series. - A Link to the Past (talk) 23:31, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm clearly not "focusing only on Google hits" since my post above doesn't even mention Google. I'm going to repeat my point since you haven't addressed it: "Yoshi's Island" is ambiguous because, depending on the context, it can refer to different things. Your example with ALTTP and subtitles doesn't really work since "A Link to the Past" can only refer to one thing, unlike "Yoshi's Island" that can refer to multiple things. – Steel 23:45, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

The GBA port can be called ALttP. Why would anyone refer to YIDS as YI? You've not shown that anyone actually DOES call YIDS YI, but I've clearly shown that SWM2 can be called YI by the fact that the rule of subtitles says that one can be used as the shorthand name for a game/movie/tv show/comic/book. - A Link to the Past (talk) 23:49, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

I think we can safely ignore GBA ports since they're practically the same thing (same goes for the GBA port here). As for people calling the DS version "Yoshi's Island", how exactly do you want me to prove it? See my reasoning above for why I do and others quite conceivably do. – Steel 00:02, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

YIDS' shorthand name is certainly not Yoshi's Island. SMW2's shorthand title is. How do we choose the original game over the series in determining what gets the main article? I find the idea that YIDS would be referred to as YI commonly silly. My point about ambiguity and context is there for you to respond to when you feel like it. In the meantime, let's change direction. Third Opinion: One can reasonably assume people would/could use Yoshi's Island as a shorthand title for Yoshi's Island DS regardless of how silly it sounds. People do the same for Washington D.C. in that they refer to it as simply "Washington" or "D.C.", despite being short enough as it is — notice that "Washington D.C." has fewer syllables than "Yoshi's Island DS" and yet people still feel the need to shorten the name.

In any case, the discussion over the silliness of someone referring to Yoshi's Island DS as simply Yoshi's Island is completely irrelevant. The term "Yoshi's Island" in the large majority of cases refers to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. The reason Google shows the DS game at the top is because it is more recent. The gaming press has used the term pretty much exclusively to describe the original game, I'm not sure of whether they still do. I agree with Link here, that this page should be made a redirect and a disambig link posted to the top of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. - hahnchen 14:56, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Change. Just realized what the third opinion was about. A better way of doing this would be to remove the disambiguation page altogether, redirect Yoshi's Island to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and tag the article with an "other use" template. Example:

For the Nintendo DS game, see Yoshi's Island DS.
