Was Phocis Albanian-speaking?[edit]

Yes, the region definitely had a significant still Albanian-speaking population as late as the era of Thomas Gordon who fought in the Greek War of Independence: Thomas Gordon describes as follows the Albanian-speaking regions of Greece: ‘Attica, Argolis, Boeotia, Phocis, and the isles of Hydra, Spezzia, Salamis, and Andros, are inhabited by Albanians. They likewise possess several villages in Arcadia, Achaia, and Messenia … Among themselves those people always converse in their own language; many of them do not understand Greek, and they pronounce it with a strong accent’ (Gordon 1872, Vol. 1, p. 34). Nationalism as a Claim to a State, BRILL, 2023. Was Gouras an Arvanite? Yes, this is not only supported by modern secondary sources but in primary ones as well. George Finlay who apparently had a very negative attitude towards this individual calls him a rude Albanian soldier.--Maleschreiber (talk) 18:47, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
