Which side was typically the wrong side of the tracks?[edit]

I’ve heard it was determined by wind direction. The wrong side became the poorer side because of all of the coal soot from the trains blew to that side. Also the noise. Anyone? I thought maybe it was also the opposite side of the tracks from which the train was loaded with passengers and cargo. Meaning, once you arrived, if you lived on the right side of the tracks, you wouldn’t need to cross the tracks or wait for trains to move in order to go home.
