A fact from William Thornton Bate appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 2 August 2008, and was viewed approximately 690 times (disclaimer) (check views). The text of the entry was as follows:
The Gazette containing Bate's promotion to lieutenant states, "With reference to the Gazette Extraordinary of the 8th instant, the following Naval Promotions have taken place, dated on that day", which I assume to refer to "No. 20026". The London Gazette. 8 October1841. {{cite magazine}}: Check date values in: |date= (help), and that Bate was recommended for promotion on the basis of some act mentioned there (which already seems to be in China). I've found the discrepancy. He had passed his lieutenant's exam prior to join the Blenheim, after which he was presumably waiting for his commission. He was then one of those leading the landing parties at Canton in the early stages of the war, during which he was wounded. This presumably was the act that secured his promotion.
