Whittlesey not Whittlesea[edit]

It is Whittlesey not Whittlesea Whittlesey means Whittle's Isle as Whittlesey is an historic island this is it. Unencyclopaedic content[edit]

This page is getting bogged down with material that has no place here: the subject matter of children's painting competitions (included in the History and architecture section!) and details of graffiti on boarded-up pubs, for instance, are out of place in an article that is meant to provide a succinct overview of the town. Far too much irrelevant detail is being included. I have tried to prune some out, and to otherwise tidy and re-order the article (although it is still somewhat unbalanced by the attempt to list every public house that has ever existed in the town!). Please remember that, as shown in the Article policies section (above right), the article should include no original research, maintain a neutral point of view, and all facts should be verifiable – which means providing appropriate references for any information that is added. Boat and Anchor[edit]

Would be interested to know why the former pub, the Boat and Anchor, is labelled [citation needed] unlike any of the other former pubs (shouldn't they have citations too). Sionk (talk) 12:27, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Famous and not famous people in Whittlesey[edit]

Not so famous -"Luke Crick, of New Road, Whittlesey, it was a step up to the adult bear suit, after he wore the child straw outfit when he was 11 years old." This reference is from a page on Paganism [Straw Bear].he is not a well known Whittlesey person and should not be in this section.

Turner the horse breeder, major personage, Hero of Aliwal is the name of his famous sire, named after Sir Harry Smith. His house on Station Road, called Springfield, was where he lived. Near the station. Turner went to Chicago seven or eight times in 1900 where his horse breeding produced large heavy horse.

The Boat and Anchor is named because it is where boats were held to discharge cargo and is adjacent to the boatyard [now a small housing development of bungalows].

Bronze Age trading[edit]

In other history, Whittlesey was an important trade route in the late Bronze Age (about 1100-800 BC), where civilisations traded with many places, including the Balkans. Such evidence is clear at the important archeological site of Must Farm, where log boats, roundhouses, bowls with food in them, and the most complete wooden wheel were housed.

Although there is evidence of Bronze Age trading at Must Farm, none of the items listed here demonstrate that. The items listed are now largely believed to have been produced on site, although there is evidence of bronze and copper imported from Wales and Cornwall, and of beads imported from Italy.
