There is no article about pre-industrial water level measuring devices[edit]

Water gauge takes you straight to sight glass, a modern device attached to boilers. People have been measuring the water level in their cisterns and wells, apart from rivers and lakes (see for instance the nilometer), for many thousands of years before boilers were created.
