How Did Wade Phillips Manage to Avoid Military Service[edit]

Phillips apparently played football in college. Even though Phillips is obese today, he must have been in sufficiently good shape long ago to perform military service. How, then, did he avoid serving in Vietnam with the 3 million other American boys who served?

College Deferment. And there was a lottery system for the draft, so after college he may have just not had his number picked.Johnelwayrules (talk) 22:14, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Various comments[edit]

The Cowboys haven't made any announcements and you are already saying he is the head coach? Im sitting in Dallas listening to the Cowboys radio station @ 3:43pm, and the press conference isnt until 5:00pm.

There has got to be some kind of error in this page.

It says he was the Denver coach for only one year in both the article and the list of coaching tenures on the right. However it also lists his record as the Denver coach as 16-16 and in the table of records I have seen on ESPN for each year as head coach it shows 2 years as coach of Denver. I do not know which entries are correct I just noticed the errors.

In Coaching Career section shouldn't "team coached by his father" be "Houston Oilers"?67.97.153.253 09:09, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New analysis sections[edit]

I'm sorry, but the new sections being added analying the coach and his releationships to players or other coaches are simply not appropriate for a bio article. That is not wat we do here, even assuming that every line is sourced properly - which it wasn't. That kind of info belongs on the blogs or sprots programs it is taken from in the first place. Thanks. - BillCJ (talk) 20:50, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Correct Name[edit]

Fired by the Cowboys[edit]

There's at least one reliable source for the Cowboys firing: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/11/08/sportsline/main7034871.shtml I suspect more are on the way...Yahoo and ESPN have both picked up the story... Bobby Tables (talk) 20:16, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, ESPN posted it as I was writing this: http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/news/story?id=5780262 Bobby Tables (talk) 20:17, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Name change to Harold Wade Phillips[edit]

[The following is copied from the Help Desk, and explains the rationale behind my change from "Wade Allen Phillips" to "Harold Wade Phillips]Mandruss  01:59, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

my name is not Allen--My first name is Harold but I have I have always gone by my middle name --Wade I wish you would correct this on my Wiki page--Wade Phillips — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.177.192.51 (talk) 01:05, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@67.177.192.51: The web-based evidence isn't clear either way. I see that your own website supports your claim, but we can't use that as a reliable source. There are sources that might pass the RS test that support your claim, including this one. There are others that dispute your claim, but at least some of them have clearly taken their information from the Wikipedia article. Since the article does not currently provide a reference for "Wade Allen Phillips" , (a debatable source is better than no source at all) I will change it to "Harold Wade Phillips" using the above source as a reference, and see if it flies. It would help tremendously if you could provide a more authoritative reference. ―Mandruss  01:48, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Mandruss: Could you explain to me why we can't necessarily use a person's own web site to reference their name? I can understand if they made big claims like winning major awards but for their own name? Is this just your reading of something like WP:PRIMARY or some other guideline? (my apologies if my series of questions makes this feel unnecessarily accusatory) Dismas|(talk) 02:03, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's my interpretation of WP:SELFPUB. Mr. Phillips may not have written the HTML for that page, but he no doubt had a lot to say about its content and I wouldn't expect the site's owners to be entirely objective about its subject. I could certainly be wrong, I'm not a BLP expert. ―Mandruss  02:25, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
WP:COI might also apply. Actually it's a better match for my reasoning than SELFPUB. ―Mandruss  02:48, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
How can someone possibly have a conflict of interest in getting their name right? AndyTheGrump (talk) 02:52, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, I'm not a BLP expert. There are various reasons one might want to get his name wrong that are not compatible with Wikipedia principles. If WP:COI applies strictly to doing one's own edits, then it wouldn't apply. Anyway, if using his website as the source is within policy, anyone please do so or just say so and I'll do it. ―Mandruss  02:56, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
