Vivienne on Wogan[edit]

I don't know enough about it myself to add it but does anyone fancy putting up info on her notorious appearance with Terry Wogan? MagicBez 19:55, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It does seem suspiciously absent, wonder if it would turn up in a search of old edits... RoyBatty42 (talk) 03:34, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Picture[edit]

Picture may be a good idea? MikeyB! 15:50, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New section[edit]

Since they don't really warrant their own article; would it be a good idea to include a section that mentions some iconic Westwood creations? I was thinking along the lines of Bondage Trousers, Muslin Tops, Pirate Boots, Apache Tops, Rocking Horse Platforms, Mini Crinis, Hooker Platforms, McAndreas Tartan, etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.63.204.62 (talk) 02:07, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism?[edit]

This page suddenly seemed much shorter than it was a month ago. Any reason why Ms/Mr 81.155.152.174 decided that over half the article should be removed? I've reverted to 87377079 and added back some of the things that were changed.

Fashion training?[edit]

For aspiring - insert some word that means rebelliously doing something without being conventionally trained for it - fashion designers, I wonder if she had any fashion training? Or did she just learn how to do patterns and so on over the years?

And maybe their should be a list of famous people who used to be teachers? Sting and former professional nudist Helen Mirren would be others.

I note she is now clickerty-click years old - you're never too old for fashion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.2.207.173 (talk) 15:39, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Education[edit]

It says 'Currently at Play School Religion - Annion'. Is this correct. I cannot find this place. Vk2tds (talk) 08:33, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Manifesto website[edit]

Should Vivienne's current website be mentioned, along with its "manifesto"? It's at activeresistance.co.uk.

The whole thing strikes me as either a tongue-in-cheek joke or completely pretentious. However radical she personally is, nowadays her shops are just one of hundreds of chains selling a canned dream. A faux campaign against propaganda does seem quite ridiculous. Comments anyone? 86.130.136.209 (talk) 00:16, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia isn't for comments and debates about whether or not Westwood's Active Resistance campaign is a sham, but the fact that the whole Propaganda/Active Resistance theme has been so central to her collections for nearly five years now should probably be mentioned.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.63.206.30 (talk) 03:50, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agree that her Active Resistance/ Manifesto should be mentioned and linked to at least once in the article.--FeralOink (talk) 00:23, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

first clause of sex and the city section[edit]

'demonstrating the impact of her long career...' this reads oddly in an encyclopaedia and sounds more like inclusion-justifying wikicratic patois. Could it be rephrased to something more natural sounding, please. 213.1.37.228 (talk) 22:47, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Biography[edit]

I don't know much about Westwood, and Googling didn't really help. In the article it says her first spouse was Derek, but in the Bio section is says he was Sam. A bit confusing? Poglad (talk) 12:31, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sourcing[edit]

Just as a reminder, an article on a living person cannot use material sourced from tabloids like the Daily Mail or the Private Eye. If these things are worth reporting here, they will have been covered by better sources. If they have not, they do not belong on a BLP. See WP:BLPSOURCES for details. --John (talk) 21:27, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment comment[edit]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Vivienne Westwood/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

Start-class: Attempting to be comprehensive but tagged as unreferenced and basically a lot indiscriminately thrown-around info.

High-importance (within WP:FASH) Influential designer whose clothes defined a musical movement and an era.

== Consistency of spouse ==

Looking at the consistent use of Derek Westwood as Vivienne's first husband, I presume that the reference to Sam in the top-right panel is incorrect. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.143.155.56 (talk) 09:10, 5 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Vivienne Westwood companies[edit]

This section goes into minute detail about the subject's profit and loss over a recent period, but neglects to mention the first forty years of her company entirely! Do such detailed profit and loss figures merit inclusion in an encyclopaedia entry whose subject is not the company, but one of its owners? This section smacks as being written with the agenda of exposing the subject's tax arrangements as hypocritical. The subject has indeed received criticism for her tax arrangements, and a statement to this effect no doubt warrants inclusion in the article — but perhaps not an entire subsection that in fact only details the period of the subject's past that has been subject to criticism.

I suggest a subsection titled "criticism and controversies" or similar would help address the partiality issues that seem to lurk in sections of this article. Tyro1984 (talk) 00:34, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. The minutiae of detail about year to year profit and loss and revenues is unnecessary. This is her BLP not an article about her company.--FeralOink (talk) 23:51, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Birth place[edit]

It is stated that Vivienne was born in Cheshire, but Tintwistle is in Derbyshire. 2A02:C7F:5A1A:B00:E021:2ED0:D485:E844 (talk) 22:46, 29 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In 1941, Tintwistle was in the county of Cheshire when Vivienne was born but since 1974, it has been part of Derbyshire. 86.187.167.142 (talk) 23:02, 29 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The current single source, from The Independent, says she was born in Glossop? Martinevans123 (talk) 20:41, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Her own website here says "Born Vivienne Isabel Swire on April 8, 1941, in the English town of Glossop in Derbyshire", so I think this needs to be changed. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:49, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
FreeBMD here also has Glossop. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:54, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Vivienne - Malcolm[edit]

They weren't married, but how to mention this in the box, category spouse? How long did their relationship last (with links)? --Leo067 (talk) 06:35, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Vivienne was Born in Hollingworth Hyde Cheshire if you check your research you will see..she and her family moved to Tintwhistle when her mother became postmaster of the post office. 2A00:23CC:6B00:B01:21F0:EB2A:3CDA:CE6 (talk) 10:56, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Revisions to article[edit]

There are several items which I am going to address. I will do each sequentially, with a pause, so if anyone wants to discuss here and/or revert, it will be easier to work collaboratively.

  1. Twitter links noting her passing need to be removed. I'll retain any of significance, e.g. that are more than just RIP Vivienne or such. DONE
  2. There is repetition in the article, especially regarding her evolving political stance over time. The reasoning is clearly explained by her and by sources. I will try to consolidate for better flow. DONE
  3. Her company's yearly earnings reports (profit, revenue, etc.) for the years 2013 through 2015, and the deltas between each year are WP:UNDUE in a biographical article. See prior discussion here on talk page. I would like to prune it back. DONE
  4. There is some English usage that is not consistent with an encyclopedia. This has been noticed by others in at least one passage; I noticed it in many more. In most cases, I am certain it is not due to GB-English vs American English, nor "inclusion-justifying Wikicratic patois" (no disrespect intended to IP editor as that DOES exist!), but rather, fashion media-speak and marketing-speak. I will alter obvious instances. There may be others that I don't catch. I tried.
  5. Duplicate references that need combining, and one spammy store locator ref that I will remove (there is a WP:RS ref already there). DONE
  6. Keep the link to and mention of her Manifesto as it was important to her work and personal outlook. DONE

Two other points to be addressed, although I don't know the answers:

  1. Someone who knows UK geography can drop a reputable source link for her birthplace here, and I will make corrections as needed.
  2. Her marital history is complicated. I don't know who she was married to versus who was her partner. Sourced info would be helpful. I think she has two children, but am not sure. We want the infobox to be consistent with the article, and of course, the sourced facts! DONE

Thank you.--FeralOink (talk) 00:31, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Following note at top of page requesting improvements, I have added further content and references to the section on 'Punk Era', namely in relation to design inspirations, types of garments designed and made by Westwood at this time, and further detail on the transformative nature of the boutique which Westwood and McLaren ran at 430 Kings Road. Many thanks! Diary of a Dress Historian (talk) 15:53, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Note: Despite the two WP:RS sources currently used, Westwood wasn't really born in Glossop, or even in Tintwistle. As this book source says, she was born at 6, Millbrook, Hollingworth, i.e. on the Manchester Road between Glossop and Tintwistle (you can see it on Google Streetview, it's a row of 12 stone cottages set back from the road). Although this BBC source says she was born in Tintwistle and was buried there, at Christ Church. So I guess Tintwistle might be slightly more accurate than Glossop, but still not entirely right. Martinevans123 (talk) 17:51, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

But am unsure if Hollingworth was in Cheshire or in Derbyshire in 1941. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:50, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
