Colleges

Dr. N. S. Kolla School of business?

I am form Vizag and I have never heard of the institution. Is somebody making an advertisement here? I moved the school from the top of the list to the third place. Pl. comment here if somebody has information about this school.

I also am not sure if the way the external link is posted is the standard way of posting external links — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.54.64.9 (talk) 11:58, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Hospitals' list cleaned up

-Apollo Heart Centre

-Care Hospital (Cardiac Centre)

Are the names of two cardiac centres rqd? Which of the two is more important?
-VisionCare Centre (Super Speciality Eye Hospital)

-Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital

How many eye hospitals are needed in the article?
-Krishna Hospital (Women's Hospital)

Is it neccessary to note that it is a women's hospital?
-Krishna IVF Clinic

Are clinics notable? A clinic near my house is a two-room affair. Does that give it a spot on Wikipedia?
-Kala Hospitals

What is this notable for?

-King George Hospital (Medical College Hospital affiliated to Andhra Medical College)

This seems to be the only one with some reason to be mentioned (affliation)

-Padmaja Hospital

-Seven Hills Hospital

What are these known for?

-MVP Colony Hospital

Colony hospital? Is there any reason for this to be here?

-Victoria Government Hospital (Government Women's Hospital)

Does being a government hospital make it notable?

-St. Joseph's Hospital (Also known as American Hospital)

Is being called the American hospital its only claim to fame?

People, there has to be a reason why we are putting up such a massive list. I am sure there are some editors taking care of this page. Until they drop by and offer their views on this, this list is moved from the main page.

I don't know why did some one remove these two schools from the list, they are very old and top rated schools in Vizag. - * St.Peter's Elementary School, Gnanapuram - * St.Peter's High School, Gnanapuram —Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.151.21.105 (talk) 19:56, 28 March 2008 (UTC) They are added back to the list. Population figures?

I just noticed that the population stated was 18,000,000.

Cleanup

This article needs a lot of work...

  1. The grammar is poor in many sentences
  2. A lot of content is POV and advertising
  3. Needs reliable sources
  4. The Tourism section has too many photos; they are are cluttering up the page Copana2002 (talk) 20:13, 29 December 2008 (UTC) -- i removed the entire tourism section. it is not relevant to the city and cluttering up the entire page with too many pictures. someone is adding it back in. i think this article needs to be locked to prevent future edits by over enthusiastic picture posters. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nballa (talkcontribs) 21:00, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

The images in the article need to be organised, and put on one side. Alternating between left and right leads to a lot of clutter. Aveek (talk) 05:12, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

I did a lot more clean up. Now there is a section entitled "The city". I'm not sure how that should be, or what subsections it should contain. Somebody familiar with the area might be able to straighten in out. Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:56, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Vishakhapatnam

Hi there, I would like to explain why I have moved the page.

Earlier the page is named "Visakhapatnam" (విశాఖపట్నం). The transliteration for letter 'శా' is 'śa'(most indians use 'sha' instead of 'śa') but old page has the spelling Vi'sa'khapatnam.

So, I mentioned in the article "(also spelled as Vishakhapatnam)" and moved the page to "Viśakhapatnam" so that it will be familiar to the people who spell it 'Visakhapatnam' or 'Vishakhapatnam' and also phonetically correct.

I am doing this to make the article better and give users better understanding.

Nagarjuna198 (talk)

It was not a good idea. It now implies (by including one non-standard character 'ś') that you have given the full transliteration. To do so you would have to transliterate every element of the name, thus giving the IAST Viśākhapaṭnaṁ. This is a clear case where common usage should trump both your idea, and the academically correct IAST. Imc (talk) 07:21, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
Google hits - Viśakhapatnam 9 hits, Vishakhapatnam 5.8 million hits, Visakhapatnam 27 million (these tend to vary, others will get somewhat different figures). The district website and at least parts of the state government website use Visakhapatnam. There is a draft policy on such names at Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(Indic) which though unadopted is the only thing we have, and gives some guidance. I have reverted it back to the previous name Visakhapatnam. Imc (talk) 07:30, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know. Nagarjuna198 (talk)

Schools have been removed

I removed an unreferenced list of schools from the article. Some seemed suspiciously like advertising attempts, like 'dance school' at the end of the list. For the rest, there was no reason for notability (except for Aloysius), no reference to back up importance, no wiki article (except for timpany). That leaves only 2 of them on the list, until there is a reason to put them back.

The list is:

I dont know why some famous schools such as Visakha Valley and BHPV school are removed from the list.

I removed all high schools listed. looks like they were listed for publicity and individual interests. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nballa (talkcontribs) 17:20, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Please do not add the list of schools back again. there are hundreds of schools in Vizag and all of them are important in their own right. try to keep the page as clean as possible. and try improving the education section if possible. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nballa (talkcontribs) 16:02, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

i agree all the schools are important, and also that the list is unnecessary. but there is nothing on education. the city was known for its excellent education facilities... so if someone can add a bit without POV/adverts should help improve the article. Elncid (talk) 17:00, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

I would recommend adding a link to list of schools in Vizag, classifying them as Govt and Private schools. Also some one please come up with list of Engineering and Degree Colleges. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Msreekanth (talkcontribs) 13:27, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Lead

Lead too long because of history paragraph. It can be truncated to history section by only mentioning the important historical points in the lead as per Wikipedia:WikiProject_Indian_cities#Lead.--Vin09 (talk) 06:37, 24 May 2015 (UTC)

Agreed. The lead presents the history in way too detail which is unnecessary. I suggest we either trim it extensively or remove it totally. Cheers, ƬheStrikeΣagle 06:45, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
Sorry about that. If you think it's too detailed then I'd suggest condensing it. I don't think its proper to completely remove it, as other Indian cities (such as Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi) have at least a paragraph or two about history in the lead. Av9 (talk) 00:24, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

Montage pic

@Av9:, @Strike Eagle: severe edit warring over montage pic. I say the montage must contain 1.port of vizag, 2.any scenic beauty like beach 3.submarine museum or any iconic place, 4.any skyline view of a place like kailasagiri, 5.IT center etc--Sairam v (talk) 04:23, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

  • Note: As Sairam says above editors should discuss the image changes in the article, instead of edit-warring over it. I have no strong opinion over the choice of images, but will protect the page (and issue blocks as a last option) if needed. I sincerely hope it does not come to that since everyone seems to be editing in good faith and just need to use the talk-page more and follow WP:BRD. Abecedare (talk) 14:14, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

@Strike Eagle:, @Sairam v:, @Abecedare: I apologize for not discussing it here. I think the collage I uploaded is best because all of the images in the montage are of major landmarks, namely the skyline view from Kailasagiri, the INS Kursura (S20), the Simhachalam Temple, Ramakrishna Mission Beach, the Visakhapatnam Port, King George Hospital, and the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, all of which have Wikipedia pages in their own rights and are major facets of Vizag's identity. The current montage (as of May 25) does not have a skyline image, and none of the images in the montage have their own Wikipedia article (or are major landmarks on the level of the ones in the montage I uploaded). Therefore, I think my montage is the best one to use on the page. I will refrain from reverting the current collage until those involved in putting it in the article have a chance to respond on the talk page. I also don't think this qualifies as a "severe edit war", as one change has been made that I have not yet reverted. Av9 (talk) 03:41, 26 May 2015 (UTC) @Strike Eagle:, @Sairam v:, @Abecedare:, @Av9:, my suggestion is your image is perfectly right. But, can use more brighter images, I mean those taken in the daylight which are more visible than in night. Also do not say like my montage is the best one to use on the page it may not be supporting WP:NPOV. Thanks. Any comments?--Vin09 (talk) 03:59, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

@User:Av9, Please upload all the individual images to Commons so as to prevent the montage from getting deleted. Cheers, ƬheStrikeΣagle 12:27, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

@Strike Eagle:, @Sairam v:, @Abecedare:,@Vin09: I uploaded all of the source information and re-uploaded my montage (an enhanced version) with links to the source file in the description page. Hopefully this is an acceptable solution to this issue. If not or if you think this is not the best solution, please respond on this talk page. I just want to emphasize that I am making all these edits in good faith, as I would like this article to be as representative and complete (and good) as possible.Av9 (talk) 15:44, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

@Av9:Nothing wrong with your image but what I referred to was remake it with replacing Simhachalam Temple, King George Hospital, the Kursura Submarine Museum, pics which are taken at night to daylight. Examples are like this: INS_Kursura, King_george_hospital, Simhachalam-temple etc. I hope you can do it. Thanks. Also, @Vinaykrishna3214: do not replace the images while discussion is in progress.--Vin09 (talk) 03:45, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

It appears the image was reverted for some reason on July 22. I went ahead and changed it back to what it was beforehand (as of July 20), as I feel as though that montage is more accurate and describes more iconic locations in the city (the reverted new montage had no places with their own Wiki articles). Av9 (talk) 04:14, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

Population?

What is "19 lakhs" in English? The population should be a standard English number since this is the English language Wikipedia. Jaguara 21:16, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

A Lakh is 100,000, which means that this article seems to contradict itself. Is the population 1,900,000, or 1,329,472? Narge 14:57, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

I want to let the authors of the page know that the population figures for Visakhapatnam are highly exaggerated. Even the census website (referred for 2001 ) or World Gazetteer(referred for 2007) don't show the population that high. Obviously the wiki info posted in the Indian city population is also wrong. As rest of the info is very informative and accurate, I appreciate if the authors correct the population figures. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Apman123 (talkcontribs) 16:17, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

I request the authors of the page to update the official population of Visakhapatnam, as it was increased to 20,91,811[1] after merging of Anakapalli and Bheemili municipalities along with 10 other panchayats in to GVMC[2][3] - Cocanad (talk) 09:57, 15 August 2015 (UTC)

someone please change the audio file that is rubbish. the whole word "visakhapatnam" is not pronounced

How can anyone write in an overview of a city as "worst and most polluted" without furnishing facts to prove it. As far as pollution is concerned, Visakhapatnam has less pollution and population compared to many other cities in India. Usage of "worst" kind of adjectives are not expected from Wikipedia, wonder how that page met standards. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.64.92.34 (talk) 13:10, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Article improvement by providing additional proofs

Hi All,

How to remove the message (This article needs additional citations for verification. (November 2014)) in the title as i have given some proofs to the citations in various articles. So, could any one let me know how can we do it in order to improve the article. If any additional proofs are required we can start searching them and we can give them.Vizagvamsi (talk) 18:01, 7 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi Vizagvamsi - ideally, every fact likely to be questioned should have a reference - which is an awful lot of references.
Looking at the current article several major and important sections like "Geography", "Buddist influence (and all its sub-headings)", "Resources (and all its subheadings)", "Cityscape" "Roadways" "Research" and "Media" have no references at all - each of these needs references - if it is a good reference, maybe only 1 reference can support all the information in "Geography", but it may need several. - Arjayay (talk) 18:21, 7 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi Arjayay, sure i have added few reference and i will be adding more to make the page look more clean with references. Please help in verifying and also suggest changes if there are required.Vizagvamsi (talk) 15:06, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

Area and population

Do not add the GVMC website info as the news on GVMC INFO says it is an outdated and does not include the newly merged municipalities info and states only 72 wards, which is wrong. Read the newspaper article reference for more info.--Vin09 (talk) 12:38, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

Vizag population

Population mentioned bin this page is metro population , Vizag city population 2011 is 1728128 . Vizag Corporation population is 1897398 . Hence i corrected it . Please know the difference between them . Vizag metropolis 1728128 , metro 1897398 . Area is 550 km2 , density around 3100 . Check it Vin09 before deleting PRATAP 13:29, 21 December 2015 (UTC) PRATAP 19:54, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

The municipalities were merged in Vizag corporation. Read carefully the news article. Vizag, Tenali and Nellore were only cities as per census 2011, they were not UA's. Check even provisional populations also at this link. I've already mentioned at Talk:Visakhapatnam#Area_and_population that the area 550 is not correct, GVMC website does not have updated info per the news paper article GVMC NEWS.--Vin09 (talk) 13:44, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

Discussion based on area and population

  • Check Hyderabad which got many municipalities mereged in it to form GHMC. Now the city metro area is spread over 9,000 sq.km. Vizag has 5,573 sq.km. population of metro area is 53.4 lakhs.--Vin09 (talk) 14:40, 21 December 2015 (UTC)
  • This is Hyderabad Area
• Metropolis	625 km2 (241 sq mi)
• Metro	7,100 km2 (2,700 sq mi)
• Elevation	505 m (1,657 ft)
• Population (2011)
• Metropolis	6,809,970
• Rank	4th
• Density	18,480/km2 (47,900/sq mi)
• Metro	7,749,334
  • Metro and metrpolis population are different , i am telling that . Left the area topic . Population density should be city population / city area , metro not considered for density k , in this there is no metro population , I have studied other city pages and got these stats for vizag , these are not my assumptions , these stats are as per protocol. Vizag city metropolis population 2011 is 1728128 . Visakhapatnam is not a clean city by any means

As per the 2011 census, 44.61% of people in Visakhapatnam city live in slums.
Here is the source:
http://www.census2011.co.in/census/city/402-visakhapatnam.html
This is the highest percentage of slums for an Indian city.

Swachh Survekshan is a biased survey conducted by the Government of India to please the states ruled by their party.

Visakhapatnam has the highest percentage of slums (44.61%) for an Indian city. These stats were reported by the 2011 censuse. The reference can be found below:

Just because the Ministry of Urban development lists Visakhapatnam as a clean city, it does not mean that it is clean.

Every city has slums. Highest number of slums isn't mentioned anywhere in your ref and also it was 2011 data. Swachch Sarvekshan is a government reference and will always be genuine and reliable per wiki as per WP:Reliable sources. For broader consensus, taking the discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Noticeboard_for_India-related_topics#Swachch_sarvekshan_rankings.--Vin09(talk) 06:43, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
It is mentioned in the reference. Please click on the "Slums" tab.

I saw it, it's just info on slums. Nowhere it mentions highest percentage of slums for an Indian city. Anyways that's nothing to do, I've placed in discussion, let other uses have their say. Notifying @LovSLif: also, who added it.--Vin09(talk) 07:01, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
Many cities in India have a far less percentage of slums in India. There are cities with less than 2% slums in India, that are far behind of Visakhapatnam in the Swachh Sarvekshan rankings. I don't want to mention those cities.

Mario-Puzo-091 (talk) 07:13, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Mario-Puzo-091 (talk) , I have gone through the link you provided. My perception is having more slums does not mean the city to be unclean post 6 years of the report. Both the reports were published by government of India. Quality Council of India, which conducted the survey, deployed 25 teams of 3 trained surveyors each to visit 42 locations in each city covering major zones like railway stations, bus stations, religious places, major market places, planned and unplanned residential areas including slums and toilet complexes

cities were informed sufficiently in advance so as to make available documentary evidence of their efforts towards improving sanitation including slums. The figures provided by you are of 2011. In these 6 years of span vizag has tremendously improved its standard in terms of cleanliness and sanitation. Finally the major motto of these rankings is to evolve competition among other cities and thereby improve the quality and sanitation of the city.By LovSLif (talk) 08:35, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
