Suggestion

The example games should be overhauled. They're not consistent in that the value varies greatly and so does the actual rarity versus the actual demand factor.

Comment

Agree with above, the only game in the list with any real collectible value is the Sega Panzer Dragoon Saga.

The list is also narrow to a few systems.

Atari games like quadran and chase the chuck wagon should be somewhere on a collection list.

Nintendo games like Golden Tee, gold cartridge, which only five were ever made is missing, too. Deekayfry (talk) 15:10, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Virtual Collections

Does anyone think there could be a section on this page about collecting virtual games ? The Steam platform has thousands upon thousands of games on it which are often cheap to buy in bundles and in sales and it has inspired quite a lot of people to collect games on steam. Steam basically encourages this behaviour though with their badges, achievements and so on, so it's not really the same as collecting physical games. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.1.220.125 (talk) 10:47, 7 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Where to go with article[edit]

If we decide to include Saga, which I am neither for/against, it opens the doors to a whole lot of other games. Maybe the rare games list should break off into a separate list article. What do people think? List of rare video games? List of collectible video games? TarkusABtalk 11:28, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

We have to ask what the current article is for. Right now, it's technically not a "list of..." article, so the goal should be to explain the phenomenon of video game collecting, with notable examples. On that basis, I think Saga is absolutely worth mentioning, as it's an example of a rare/collectable game that has been covered extensively by numerous reliable sources - the fact that it's not as rare as other games is immaterial.
Um... that hasn't answered your question. Maybe this article should be a list article. Popcornduff (talk) 11:46, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There are a few articles that discuss collecting, so I think it would be better to split the list off and leave this article room to grow. [1] [2] [3] [4] TarkusABtalk 14:08, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tentative addition[edit]

A new report (based on a YT video, but covered now in an RS) is claiming there's been fraud and deception in the market. As this has BLP-related issues, I am not going to add it until there's more RSes discussing it or to have appropriate counterstatements, but I want to make sure I dropped the link off to have to use if we do add this. I will say that the current article is probably focusing too much on high-end auctions of sealed near-mint games. Video game collecting is definitely a wider topic - most baseball card collectors don't own Honus Wagner cards. Some more details about the hobby-in-general would probably be good for balance. SnowFire (talk) 21:51, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It would be great to have more on the hobby side -- but there's very little about that, outside of the contrast with these big budget auctions. It wasn't well documented outside of the users involved and, in this case, the list of rare games, but that mostly was from word of mouth. --Masem (t) 21:56, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And now this [6] again -- not yet enough due to BLP to include, but now we have a different take on this. --Masem (t) 12:21, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Here are some sources: Video Games Chronicle, Nintendo Life, Games Industry on the resale of graded games. Hope this helps --93.42.64.140 (talk) 20:36, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
