Apple Example

This isn't really a classic example of vertical integration as defined in the beginning of the article. Apple's "integration" of hardware and software into a single product has nothing to do with whether they represent a "vertically integrated" business. They source parts from other firms, they commission many of those parts with exclusive designs for Apple, but they don't "own" their suppliers. Their suppliers are not exclusive. Apple may be a good example of "forward integration" with the retail store model but I think the talk about integrated hardware and software muddies the concept with a totally unrelated use and meaning to the word "integrate".
